It's just debate, if you don't like it then don't bring it up, for example, what you are doing NOW. Just as you want to explain your side, so do atheists.
"Shouldn't you be busy coming up with the next breakthrough in science to prove your idiosyncratic ways of thinking?"
Why can't the christians leave US alone??

Because in a country where we have religious freedom, there are too many people pushing their own beliefs on everyone. Its just not the Christians, but the Jehovah Witnesses, the Baptists, etc..
People argue and fight over religion not realizing that most religions are a mesh of one another. Paganism, which was around before Christianity has a huge foundation in Christian and Catholic beliefs. There is nothing wrong with recognizing it, but most will not.
Why do the Jehovah Witnesses feel that it is necessary to knock on people's doors early on a Saturday morning and push their propaganda? How do they know someone is not Jewish and celebrating their Sabbath?
Everyone has to defend their beliefs over and over because people are too busy trying to convert other people. I was raised Catholic, but my beliefs are eclectic, and I do not submit to any organized religion.
If you want to be technical about it -- Jesus preached in the streets and talked to those who wanted to listen -- didn't force you to become part of an organization who's places of worship ask for money or who have more gold and precious jewels than a museum.
If you don't want a serious answer to your question/comment -and want to be defensive, you'll always find yourself defending your beliefs.
I feel this way-- if you believe what you believe and I believe what I believe, that makes this world a better place, but if you push your beliefs and I push my beliefs, it makes us bitter people who then move on and infect others with out hate for one another.

So I am assuming by "us" you mean christians. Personally I don't think it is becomes an us vs. you kind of thing until what you are going to be ignored happens.
I don't think that it should be a fight.
Also, you are being quite hypocritical.
You accuse athiests of being so mean and having nothing better to do while you are bashing them in your very question and calling them "idiosyncratic".
Your right, our time is spent better elsewhere.
How about cleaning up all the messes that you "we love everybody christians make".
People are always going to clash on things that they don't agree on. Fact of life.

For one thing, you are generalizing all atheists as if we're all looking at stiring up trouble. That's like saying all christians or anyone of religious faith are fanatic fundalmentalists. Come on now. Do you honestly think that's fair? If you look around in these answers, you will find that many atheists will answer questions in a non-confrontational and non-threatening manner. The ones that do, have anger issues.

i imagine the better section about faith (and that i'm an Atheist!) is that it does fill a void: the human needs for belonging, order, hierarchy and faith. i imagine all and numerous, inspite of faith, needs this stuff, and faith does fill that void. that's in basic terms that to keep the custom going (and to some, it truly is a surprising custom that fulfills many needs straight away!) they favor to keep the "god" element alive... so, there you bypass. @Holy: teach Abe Lincoln existed? ok, he has beginning archives, and legal documentation. That, and he's favourite for interacting with genuine human beings from no longer that in the previous... are you an fool...?

Do all these altheists tie you a chair and give you electric shocks if you don't argue? If not, it takes two willing participants to argue, and you're certainly pulling your weight.
When was the last time an atheist knocked on your door during dinner and tried to convince you to abandon your beliefs?
Do we pass laws making your church put "Christianity is just a Theory" stickers on your bibles?
Is it the athiests who allow non single-celled people to die every day because they hobble stem cell research to make sure all those unused single-celled "people" at fertility clinics are flushed down the drain instead?
Have you every been forced to swear to Charles Darwin on his Origin of Species book before they'd let you testify in court? (Sorry Chuckles fans, I know he was deeply religious :-)
Do these fall into your catagory of answers "to be ignored"? If you've already preselected acceptable answers, then you should confine such questions to your bible study group. Tell you what, I'll leave you alone when you leave us alone.

You decry atheists for attack you, yet you strike the first blow: "Shouldn't you be busy coming up with the next breakthrough in science to prove your idiosyncratic ways of thinking?
Surely your time can be better spent else where........"
I'm sorry you feel put upon.

I suppose when "we" leave them alone.
I say "we" like that since I've never argued/discussed with an atheist. I've gotten grief from some born again fundy in college, a Jehovah's Witness, and some other assorted Protestants, though admittedly not many. I would never dream of interfering with another person's belief system, unless it required sacrificing babies or something.
I don't know why we can't ALL learn to tolerate each other. Even if your definition of tolerance is "leave me alone, and I'll leave you alone." Works for me.

You obviously feel attacked. Maybe you shouldn't use beliefs to "fight" or "fight" for them - fighting only works with facts, and with an arguement - not personal faith.
Although on some levels, science is much the same as religion! In ancient greece, they used mythology to explain how things around them work. Today, scienctists and inventors have to believe in something or imagine it before it can be made. Clearly science and philosophy goes hand in hand.

I understand where you question may be coming from, but I don't see how some of the comments you have made are much different.
you have made comments on their way of thinking and told them to go elsewhere. How is this any different from when an Atheist says something negative about Christians?
