My best choice is a Kia Spectra. Both Spectra (4-door sedan) and Spectra5 (5-door hatchback) come with optional automatic, as I have seen, the used automatic models are usually 70% Spectra (2000+) and 30% Spectra5 (2004+), 20% of total Spectra and Spectra5 models (all together) being on the sportier SX packages (on 2004+ models). All Spectras between 2000-2002 have nothing much (except some with am/fm stereo cassette and power locks optional) and all between 2003-2006 have standard power locks and windows, am/fm stereo cd players with 6 or 8 speakers (6 on base, 8 on SX packages). As for keyless entry, check above 2004 models for manufacturer-made keyless entry (some 2000-2003 models have non-Kia custom alarms, but no keyless entry). As all Kia's sedans, hatchbacks, and coupes, it gets near 40mpg (4cyl) and 30mpg (6cyl- if your lucky to find the 5% of any 2006 V6 models found used). For $4000-$6000, a 2000-2003 KIa Spectra can be yours and for $7000-$10000, you can get a quite reliable 2003-2006 Kia Spectra/Spectra5. Whatever your limit, any Spectra or Spectra5 can be much fun to drive as well as fuel efficent.

I have a 2006 Kia Spectra and I absolutley love it. Mine is an automatic with keyless entry and trunk opener, powere windows, and locks. seats are adjustable to move up and down as well as back and forwards. It came with a cd player, and am/ fm. it has a smooth ride and comfortable for long distance. It gets about 30 mpg as well, so its great for commuting.

I have a 2001 KIA Rio. First one off of my dealer's lot. Cheapest car on the market. It has 107,000 miles on it and I have spent less than $400 on repairs with the exception of oil changes. Only minor repairs. It has performed flawlessly. It has never failed to start. It has nice trunk space, good size back seat. It is a small car and not a smooth ride but for the price it is hard to beat. Especially for commuting long distances. It gets great gas mileage. Mine is a 5 speed manual. I will, however, consider a Toyota Yaris when I buy a car next year. Yaris seems worth looking in to.

We own a Sportage and a Rio (in Aust) don't know what it is called in US. Never cease to be amazed by the number of people who dump on them, particularly as most have never driven let alone owned one. Sportage is a great car I have done 87,000km (54,000 miles) in ten months (business & fun) brought second hand for work country trips, apart from routine services and tyres, I couldn't even buy a tank of petrol with what it has cost me.
The wife drives a Kia Rio - the most economical thing I have ever driven 45 litre tank, gets well over 800km (500 miles) to a tank on a trip, city driving is giving 550 - 600km to the tank. Incredible turning circle, fantastic brakes.
Value for money - Great.
Off road my Sportage can get up hills on my brothers farm that his SWB Landcruiser & Prado have to use winches to pull themselves up the last 40 - 50 feet.
Don't under estimate them and don't listen to the knockers who have never owned or driven one. Funny they never talk about the Patrols or Cruisers that have inherant problems - funny about that.
I would have no hesitation buying another to replace either car.

We have two Kia's. For college I recommend either the Spectra or the Sportage.

If you are going to get a used car, get a Honda or Toyota.
Based on Consumers Reports Magazine, Kias - new or used - should be avoided whenever possible.

You do know that you put this in GMC, don't you?
Don't waste your time on a KIA. They are unreliable. If you want a smaller car, try a Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR, or Aveo. They are smaller and DOMESTIC! Support our economy! Buy American!
