My cat is only about 13 months old, he's a Maine Coon, and he brings home pieces of wood charcoal. We aren't certain he is eating it since we just see him bring it to the door and he has black on his teeth and lips like an oreo. He doesn't hunt very well, only finds little critters and watches them or follows them around. (he's kind of dumb) Any ideas?

Your cat is not dumb I have a Maine Coon myself and she is very smart she gets into trouble all the time.
He may be bringing you presents be glad they are not mice or birds and it just a piece of wood. you are lucky to have such a special cat like him. Maine Coons are very intelligent Kitties.
If you are not sure about the presents please do not hesitate to ask the vet about it.

Just another thing to think about. Charcoal can help absorb toxins from the system, and can help with excess stomach acid. Your cat may be "self-medicating" an upset tummy, or trying to correct a vitamin deficiency.

(Dogs will eat grass when their stomachs are upset...maybe its a similar behavior.)

Check his diet. If he's on cheap cat food, try a premium brand. Offer raw egg, salmon, and other meats as a supplement. See if improving how he eats affects "What" he tries to eat.

Just a thought...

Where is he getting the wood charcoal? Maybe he's trying to show you something. Of course it could be that he's bringing you gifts. If that's the case, be glad it's charcoal and he's not such a good hunter. My cat used to bring me mice, frogs, and lizards, and all still alive!

Sounds like a young cat, not dumb. Ask his vet. Probably nothing to worry about, just to be safe, have him checked out by his vet.
