Take him out to eat at a good steak house. He would appreciate that more than a present.

Does your dad have any hobbies? If so, you could get him gifts related to the hobbies. For example, if he collects coins, get a 2007 Silver Dollar. They cost more than a dollar (probably about $20 or so). They make for a good investment.

You can also do a little research. Find out what songs were popular when he was growing up. Maybe get a CD with his favorite songs on them. What kind of candy did he like? Junk food? Maybe make up a gift basket with all the stuff he is "not supposed to eat."

Are there any other siblings in your family? A nice gift would be to have your photograph taken as a group. Put the photo into a nice frame. Your dad can take it to work and put it on his desk (if he has one), or he can keep it on his night stand.

Make his favorite meal and buy a nice cake.

I would stay away from those "over the hill" gifts. After the laughs, they get thrown away or given to charity. Make this a thoughtful and memorable gift!

You can never go wrong with a surprise party. Tell him he needs to get home by a certain time because you wanted to go out to get some pizza. Decorate the place (ur house) and invite some of his closest friends and even a few of urs. Make or get a custom made cake in the shape of a 4 and 1 in the shape of a 0. Then put the traditional happy b-day love your friends and family. trust me He Will LOVE IT. I did the same thing for my mom and sure she wasnt happy about turning 40 but she was realy happy. Trust me your dad will never have a smile as big as the 1 on his face if you do this. I hope this works.

Hi Sara, I'm a 40 year old Dad. I know its difficult to buy presents, you want it to mean something but what do you buy us difficult and boring people? You Dad will love whatever you get him. It also depends on your budget. I personally like books on astronomy, science fiction, standard fiction, and history (but then I am very boring). If you think that your Dad would like this sort of thing, then my best three books are: 1/ Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer (Everest Disaster) best book I've read for years 2/ Anything by Iain Banks (fiction) but you have to like challenging thoughts 3/ Anything by Iain M Banks (science fiction) - I can thoroughly recommend the Algebraist (last one I read) Good luck. Remember, whatever you get him, he'll love you.

I think you want to celebrate 40th birthday of your dad. Than do one thing. On this very special day wake up early in the morning. Get ready before your parents. Do prayers for your dad and mom. Arrange some surprise gift for your dad. When you meet your dad (and mom also) - touch his feet, give him a gift and wish him for this wonderfull day. The gift may be a single flower or a good book also. Do what you can do for your mom and dad on this special day and make them happy. Remember that we are here in this wonderful world only because of our parents. Do every possible efforts for them and get blessings of God. (We Indians believe that there is a God in our mother and father).
Thanks., JP.

Just don't get something that would make him feel old. If he likes sports, get him a basketball or something like that. You could try to write him a poem if you can write. Or if there is something that you know he would like to have and it is more expensive, put money together with your mom or sister/brother. Does your father smoke? If he does, you could buy him something nice where to put cigarets, or buy cigars for him.
I hope you'll find the right gift. Good luck!

Depending on how much you want to spend, get him 40 of something. 40 socks maybe. Make him a poster saying: You are older than...(and put either a picture of dirt or some actual dirt on it). you are older than....(put a picture of Moses on it), etc.

Of course, if you come from a classy family, these ideas won't work. They worked very well in my family.

Write him a beautiful letter (a poem, if you can!)...you know what he likes... you can buy a good book (if he likes reading), and try to be always the best kid!

FATHER I LOVE YOU!

Father I love you
And you know
That
Here it is my open heart that
Exists because of you...
Read
In
Love
Old words,
Very old words for the
End of
Yesterday...
Orange thoughts that
Understand everything in you, in me, in us...

Have a great day!
