when our American children-of all races--especially inner city kids--go to schools that are delapidated and in need of money? If they really want to help the quality of thei races' education, wouldn't it make better sense to spend those 42 million--Oprah or 12 million-Russell Simmons-on balck kids in the US?
It's kind of if I sent 42 million to Sweden because my ethnic grandparents are Swedish, isn't it? Please explain?

I take my hat off to Oprah and Simmons, the majority of the African-American race don't appreciate the opportunity to receive an education. You must beg and plea for them to go to school and then to remain respectful in class. Those of us who do go to school end at high school and refuse to even enter college. Russel Simmons promotes thousands of groups a year to sing rap and to promote rap and violent but yet his children are receiving a good education. Maybe now that the African-American students here stateside see that the "Famous Black People" are aiding the children that would appreciate an education maybe they would be less likely to drop out and have the money brought home to the United States to aid our African-American students. Many people in the 60's gave their lives if not literally to the Civil Rights Marches so that our children could go to school and have the same opportunities as the White Americans and now the children as well as some parents are throwing it back into the faces of those they gave up much for our equal rights. If we want the support the famous to aid us maybe we as a race should forget all the silliness of reality tv and get back to the basic of raising our children and stop allowing the television, Ipod, and internet do the raising for us. Not all of the AA race is all about parties and nonsense this is not meant as the entire human race but for those who want to complaint about why Oprah and Simmions wants to send money for those that may take advantage of the opportunity given them.

You're right that we do need to take care of our own yard, but I think what they're doing is wonderful! The African continent has some of the worst poverty in the world. It has the highest AIDS rate and more orpahns than any other single country. Their infrastructure is abysmal in sanitation and water / electric resources. In most of Africa, children are routinely victimized as forced soldiers or as slaves. Child rape is high. They do not have access to education and they would jump at the chance to receive the worst that our poorest inner city has to offer. I see these contributions to educate them and to give them a better life a beautiful humanitarian gift. I applaud their generosity. The issues of our own educational system and the needed improvement are a different issue. If I could give money to a school to build a new track field and buy computers, or I could build a school and offer an opportunity of a better life to the most underprivilaged children on earth, I would opt for Simmon's and Oprah's choices as well.

I'm wondering the same thing, too. I mea we do have poverty in the US, too. Some aren't fortunate enough to get their education. What I really don't get is that why is it always have to be AFRICA? I don't mean to hate, but what about other 3rd world country? I see that famous people alway try to "help out" others to be better, but it only narrows it to the same country that everyone looks into helping.

I agre with your last statement, though. Seems like they only help those of the same ethic group.

Yes I get your point but, conditions in Africa are much worse than the conditions in the U.S. The Famous black people are trying to send money to Africa, and trying to educate them so that their country can have leaders of thier own. Africa can't get out of it's poor condition without educated Africans. Yes the U.S. could send it's own doctors over to help, but it would be better if they could have their own doctors and teachers. The United States government is the source that should be giving poor people in America better housing, and food but the U.S. can't because we are spending about 2 billion dollars a week in Iraq.

Your thoughts are valid but those children in 3rd world countries have almost no way of getting any education at all. I truly believe that this world would be a much better place if every soul had a good education.

(Lived in Africa and have seen it.)

None know of. Africa isn't a case of simple education. They refuse change even in the face of death. Tribal traditions and tribal war are still the rule.

i give you a star for asking,
i don't have an answer.
it does seem silly,
especially when we have
homeless children here in the USA.
its not about race to me,
but black people almost
always bring race up.
Oprah is mega rich and seems to
only support black projects.
