I know what the saying means. I'm just curious if anyone knew how it came into existence.

The more familiar quotation is "Blood is thicker than water."

The only time I've ever heard the expression "Blood's thicker than the mud" is in Sly and The Family Stone's hit song from.... well, never mind the year.... "Family Affair".

Well, it's "blood is thicker than water", but it means family counts for more than anything else

never heard of that one but i am familiar with blood is thicker than water my grand ma always say it and it is true, but mud? not a chance.
