idon't cover my tatts up at work as i have both arms nearly sleeved with them.in my job my tatts tend to help more than anything as the elderly are fascinated by them & as they have very severe dementia most of their brain activity has gone but they do their best to talk to me about them as its something new to them.
i get a few odd looks from family members but when they see their mam or dad trying to communicate with me cos of my appearance their faces light up!!

I'm like most people on here, I have 5 tattoos and am a Sales Administrator for 5 Sales managers in London. My job is not overly professional but I do have to some times see clients. The only tattoo any one could see would be my Celtic band around the top of my arm, I rarely have it on show but when i do it does not bother people. Tattoos don't change the person you are if anything you are more unique.

I am a high earning recruitment consultant and have an IQ of around 135 so not too bad! I have considerable coverage but I must admit its all in places I can easily cover up. My most visible tattoos are on my feet and I always keep these covered at work. Am considering a wrist tattoo but once again I'll have to ensure I can cover it up with a thick watch strap or something.

Agreed - I think quite of few of us have lots of tattoos and professional jobs....
etrigone - my husband does the same thing as you. He's been with his company for 16 years. No one would ever know he has tattoos.
We also have a side business we have started - luxury rental cars. When delivering/working with customers no one would have a clue that my whole back is covered in a tattoo/tattoos. I also have my own bookkeeping business.
Most of the time I have no problem showing my tattoos, but I know when to cover them in case I would make someone else uncomfortable.
Being older though it might be different for us since we aren't just starting out in our careers and are more established in life. I didn't start getting them until a few years ago.....

Random thoughts here.

Intelligence is rather arbitrary. IQ tests cover very few skills, and like any test you can learn to do the test itself & still be dumb as a box of hammers. And trust me, having a masters or PhD only means you're stubborn & persistent, not that you're smart. There is indeed a thing called "intelligence", but I'm not smart enough to fully define it. Who is?

Jobs, on the other hand, are easier to track. Like pretty much all of the regulars, I think I'm in a good position career wise. I'm a senior systems engineer with UCSC, getting to play software developer and systems administrator as the job calls for either. I've worked at a number of big name companies in the Silicon Valley, bailing from them in ~2001 as I got tired of the long hours. My only problem now is management is the only place to go from where I'm at, and I'd prefer to stay cutting edge & technical. I can pretend to be more misanthropic that way. :)

The old presumptions are slowly fading away, but they will take a while. At times I think the older generations just need to die off; so few (but some!) of them adapt.

I'm not covered per se, and Somebody is rather ahead of me with her way cool backpiece, but I think I'm catching up. Two more sessions in the next two weeks; that should be a good two additional koi/20+ square inches of ink per appointment - or more. W00t!

P.S. Congrats on the promotion!

i have 3 tattoos i wouldnt call that loads but its alot more than most ppl and i think im very intelligent ive had plenty of really nice jobs, like customer service, detention officer. my husband also has three and he is a supervisor at an armored truck service and hes in the military. my brother has 3 or 4 (cant remember) and he is an assistant manager at wal-mart which is a very well payed position. i think that many successful ppl have them and it has nothing to do with a persons level of intelligence its just a style choice.

A guy I used to know (friend of a friend) was also covered in tattoos, he had them all round his neck, arms, back and legs. He was also about 6'2" tall, with a skin head and looked like a proper rough nutter. But..........engage him in conversation and he was one of the most gentle people I knew, a real gentleman who was an avid reader of all sorts of stuff and not only love the seemingly obligatory metal LOL, but was also a huge fan of classical music. He even loved Shirley Bassey!! He in an engineer so is far from thick! You can't judge a book by it's cover!

I can't give a best answer, but I do believe that people who have tattoos say nothing about their intelligence. I think that western society is slowly beginning to accept the mainstream value of tattoos. It is becoming a socially acceptable trend. I'm in my 20s and I barely know anyone who does not have some sort of permanent body modification, whether it be peircing, branding or tattoo.

Good for you! I don't have loads of tattoos, but I will be getting more, and I like to think I'm pretty intelligent. I also have a nose piercing. I am a receptionist, so I am the first one people see when they come in my company's door. People can make whatever snap judgements they want, that doesn't matter. The people that matter know the real me, and know I'm not some freak.

i have loads of tattoos, and i mean covered (lost count how many!). Thing is, all my tats stop where my clothes end, so when i'm at work all suited up, i choose not to show them. Not because of what people may think, but because i choose to keep them for myself and i like to look smart for potential business customers (even though we are becoming relaxed to tattoos, some people still like to deal with a clean cut guy!) However...come "dress down friday", the new starters in the company don't know what to say when i'm in a tshirt! all fun!
