how do we check out the doctor before we even see them??

You can go to your state's medical licensing board on-line to see if they have had any disciplinary action on their license. As far as their personal style or "bedside manner", this must be assessed in person when you meet them. I choose to see nurse practitioners as they actually listen to me and take my concerns seriously. In any event, it would be good idea to take a list of questions with you for your first appointment.

I first ask around, depending on what the problem is and see what the reports back from other Patients have been. Then I pop in to see the Doctor and ask a few simple questions, like a 'Hi how are you' approach'. While inside the room I check for certificates and insurance and then do a quick search on the Internet.
