Details: plugged into a new PC (winXP) with Firewire. Yesterday I used WinDV123 to capture two 45 min tapes, no problems.

Today when I try to output to tape, it starts runnning (ie software working great) and then the deck just turns off for no reason. I am able to turn it right back on again (turn power sw on/off _or_ by unplugging power cord and then replugging). Tried a different tape, same problem. It worked fine earlier today using a Mac (recording to tape from HD).

Has not been mishandled. All cable connections cheked and secure. Tried two different power outlets. It does this with the Firewire plugged in or not plugged in.

the sony video walkman will not 'record' if it does not see video coming in. one cause would be if you have a monitor or other cable attached to the rca video connector. this is a "2-way" connector used for both playback and record, and if anything is connected, it will use this as the source of record video, which of course there is none.
