Yes dogs ARE color blind, they see in two colors instead of three exactly the same as some color blind people. The difference between a dogs eyes and ours is that a dog has fewer cones (collect color) and more rods (collect light) so a dog sees colors about like a color blind person, and sees at night about like a person using night vision goggles.

We see "VIBGYOR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red)
dogs see "VIBYYYR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, and Red). The colors Green, Yellow, and Orange all look alike to dogs

Experts say because of the rods and cones ratio in a dog, they are color blind. They take the way humans see and apply that principal to dogs.

However, scientists could tell me anything and I would not be able to dispute them.

Yes ... they have a difficult time distinguishing reds and greens. Although dogs are color blind, they do not see the world in black and white.

Extensive scientific testing on dogs supports the conclusion that they live in a colorless world. The testing done primarily focussed on the dogs' responses to colors for food. Dogs could not tell the difference between one color, a signal for food, and other colors, that were not for food. Similar tests conducted on cats produced similar results, which led scientists to conclude that they, too, are colorblind and live in a gray world.

Dogs are NOT completely colour blind. We only have a broader spectrum of colours. Dogs see primarily in greens blues yellows greys and whites.

Dogs are able to see yellow and blue, tho muted in comparison to how we see it, they can distinguish it. Red is one they don't really see. We use targets with blue and yellow tape on it in my obedience classes as they are colors the dog can see best.
