The general answer is that vegetable oil comes from a vegetable like corn and olive oil (guess what) comes from olives. Each oil has two attributes which are very important in cooking flavor (or not) and smoking point.
When you are looking for minimum flavor you would pick canola or grapeseed both of which also have high smoking points. If you are looking for flavor pick olive oil which comes in several grades. Extra Virgin is from the first (and cold) pressing has low acidity, lots of flavor, but a low smoking point and is generally reserved for finishing a dish or low temperature applications. Other grades are "virgin" , "olive" and blends these are sequentially less flavorful and of increasing smoke point.
Extra Virgin Olive oil (EVOO) is expensive and comes with lots of different flavor combinations. Better gourmet stores will usually have an EVOO tasting bar where you can check them out. Using a great EVOO as a finishing touch can really "make" a dish.
There are many other oils on the market which are useful for flavor (say in salads) or as finishing oils. One sleeper is unrefined peanut oil which is only available in oriental markets but is a secret in Asian cooking and is nothing like Planters in flavor.
Have fun!

Extra virgin is from the first cold pressing of the olives and has low acidity and is not bitter. After the first pressing the pressed olives are heated to drive out residual oils. These oils are acidic and bitter and don't taste very good. A lot of people who don't like olive oil get that dislike by using the secondary oils. Try some high quality Extra Virgin olive oil from Italy, Greece or Spain and you will see the difference.

The olive is such a fancy source that it is always featured on a label (actually it is a fruit because it has a seed in it). That classiness lets them charge more for its oil. Plain old corn or peanuts and such are from vegetable sources but they lack the high status of olives and just have either their own name or "vegetable blend" on their bottles.

Olive oil has a lower burn temperature and more intense flavor. It's high in monosaturates ((as opposed to polyunsaturates in vegetable oil). And technically, an olive is a fruit.
