I had the service engine light code tested and they siad it was due to the gas cap, I replaced the gas cap and the light when off on its own, then a week later came back on, so I had it tested again and again was the gas cap. Also, we seem to notice it only happens when I fuel the car up half way...any one have the same problem or know what they did to correct this? Thanks!

I have heard that if you don't put the cap on tight that the light will come on. I don't know if that will help.

Be sure that the new gas cap that you put on is directly from the dealer, and not an aftermarket, as this can cause problems. The gas cap being loose, or not being tightened down to 3 clicks can also trigger those codes. It does, however, have a separate system related to the pressure and vent system within the fuel system called the evaporative emissions system, and there are a number of different solenoids and valves within that system that can stick either open or closed, and that will also trigger the light. If tightening the cap doesn't work, try making sure that there is no rust around the rim of the gas filler neck, as this will prevent a proper seal of the cap. From there, if the light still is on, take it to your tech for a smoke test. This will pinpoint the leak and you'll be able to have it repaired for good. Good Luck.

Your car must have been setting a code P0442.
You could have a leaking fuel tank sender seal.
The seals on these vehicles sometimes give out and cause a small leak.
I've replaced many of these seals over the years.
Of course this is just one of several different things that could cause the problem.
Many shops assume that the gas cap must be to blame when these codes set. The problem is that you can replace the cap and then clear out the code and the light will stay off for a few days, but it will pop back on eventually.
Hope this helps!

Don't think it is the gas cap..although if you do not tighten cap, with 3 or more clicks, then light will come on..but if you are sure that you are tightening the gas cap, then you probably have a bad purge valve, but do this, when light comes back on..check you gas cap..if it is loose, then tighten and then after so many driving cycles the light will go off by itself.....best thing to do is have a smoke test run on the gas system...OH! aftermarket gas caps not recommended to meet GM standards..

it is going to bypass off after some "starts off and forestalls". The examine engine gentle will come on alongside with the gasoline cap gentle by way of fact the computing gadget video show instruments the strain interior the tank to ascertain no gasoline vapor is leaking into the ambience. If it sees a leak, those lighting fixtures will come on. lots of the time that is by way of fact the cap replaced into left off after a fill-up. There is a sensor connected with the fuel tank that is malfunctioning. Sensors cost only a couple of dollars, getting it replaced will cost more, if it is in the fuel tank. I used to have a Ford that had the same problem. While getting some other work done on the car, they replaced the sensor and that fixed it.
