One Shot One Kill
According to figures released by the Department of Defense, the average number of rounds expended in Vietnam to kill one enemy solder with the M-16 was 50,000. The average number of rounds expended by U.S. military snipers to kill one enemy soldier was 1.3 rounds. That's a cost-difference of $23,000 per kill for the average soldier, vs. $0.17 per kill for the military sniper.
According to the U.S. Army, the average soldier will hit a man-sized target 10 percent of the time at 300 meters using the M16A2 rifle. Graduates of the U.S. Army sniper school are expected to achieve 90 percent first-round hits at 600 meters, using the M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS).

The sniper has special abilities, training, and equipment. His job is to deliver discriminatory, highly accurate rifle fire against enemy targets that cannot be engaged successfully by the regular rifleman because of range, size, location, fleeting nature, or visibility.

Sniping requires the development of basic infantry skills to a high degree of perfection. A sniper's training incorporates a wide variety of subjects designed to increase his value as a force multiplier and to ensure his survival on the Battlefield. The art of sniping requires learning and repetitiously practicing these skills until mastered. A sniper must be highly trained in long range rifle marksmanship and field craft skills to ensure maximum effective engagements with minimum risk.
A lot of people have the misconception that to be a good sniper, you have to be a good shooter. Shooting is only 20 percent of the course at the Army Sniper School. It takes a patient person, a disciplined person, a person who is used to working alone. In addition to marksmanship skills, the school instructs on detecting and stalking a target, and estimating the range of a target. The course also covers concealment and camouflage, as well as observation exercises.

The first U.S. Army Sniper School was initiated in 1955, right after the Korean War cease-fire. The present U.S. Army Sniper School was established at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1987. The length of the school is 5 weeks. The Army National Guard Sniper School was established in 1993 at Camp Robinson Arkansas.

I don't catoragize one branch better or worst. I can say the army sniper school even the national guard sniper school put out the best snipers in the world. They do invite snipers from marines and the world to compete for top sniper team (a two man team). Army Snipers are always their intire lives advancing their craft to meet the changing world. A sniper in the modern battlefield has evolved andt senior snipers over a life time, work in personnel combat experience to continue training future world class snipers. Ft benning Georgia is the home of the army sniper program and and other Infantry elite schools thier training is extremely hard and demanding. Army Green berets also have thier own sniper training. A good insite into past sniper training and application if your interested in past snipers army and marine is: Inside The Cross Hairs snipers in vietnam.

It involves a lot more than just shooting. In fact, in the army sniper school, shooting is less than 20% of the course. The other 80+% is fieldcraft, i.e. how to stay undetected in the field, how to move about stealthily, how not to leave traces, and so on and so forth.

Snipers are force multipliers for the commanders, if you want to use the modern term. They are tools that when used properly, increases the effectiveness of friendlies and decrease effectiveness of hostiles. They are often used as scouts.

If you think shooting is fun, you probably are NOT ready to be a sniper. Since you will see people die, up close and personal through a scope. You will see them and all that.

Sniper school is very demanding. It will always have the motto of one shot one kill. There is SO much more to being a sniper than simply being able to shoot well. You must learn to survive on your own and to become as invisible as possible no matter what the surrounding area looks like. Something else to keep in mind. Its not about the violence, its about the silence.

evbody tell you they were one. However I was one. In nam you had a Sniper #. Mine is very low. We had the xm-21 (now its the m-21) the x stood for experimental,
What can i tell you about it??:
That training aint much...you either can or cant shoot.
A ton of people pass that cant shoot a lick.
I guess the main thing is this;
how do i say this??
After 38 years..it nevr stops. Im have 1 psych, 1 lcsw, and will be going to miami military nut house soon for 90 day stay. Im disable, hvnt worked in 30 years. explotion like elec transformers BLAST in your head. I havnt picked up a gun in 37 years. i hv no enemies cept bad people.
Vietnam was good people--we were WRONG.
Iraq and Iran are good people--We are WRONG.
Id be more than happy to fight bad people. If you decide to try and be a sniper to murder good people-id be happy to get with you and attempt to save good people before you arrive.

My best bud in Nam was a snipe, and point blank, it is a job that I couldn't do, and I'm a damn good shot. But, I'm much better suited to being one of those blasting away with 50k rounds without ever hitting someone. You will find that when push comes to shove, 99.99% of the guys are in the same boat. Killing someone is no fun and it isn't pretty.

Not sure about Army but most are the same. I can tell you a bit about USMC, as our program was cloned a bit from the Army's school. There are many segments to it, with classes in consealment, shooting, and physical fitness. If deployed as one in many situations you are a loner, but in most situations you are deployed with a spotter and one to two in a security team. In truth, and most that have done it, will tell you that it is not as romantic as it is made out to be, however, it is a great MOS. Good luck if you are thinking about it!
