In theory as long as it does not expire whilst there then you are OK.

In practice you should have at least six months. Terms & Conditions of most travel companies also specify 6 months and can refuse you passage if you have less.

Some countries may accept less for short visits but they have the right to refuse entry. Individual countries may apply any restrictions they wish.

When you apply for a new passport then any unexpired time up to 9 months will be added to your new passport so there is really no need to let it get so near to expiring before you travel.

A passport is issued by the country of which you're a countrywide — no longer the country you reside in or the country you commute to. in case you have greater beneficial than one citizenship you're eligible for greater beneficial than one passport. in the experience that your mom is a British citizen, she would desire to get a British passport. this gives her a felony suitable, as an ecu citizen, to commute to Italy and lower back to the united kingdom. If she is a Pakistani citizen purely, she isn't eligible for a British passport. if so she would be would desire to coach for a visa to be related to her Pakistani passport.

If you are travelling within the EU, as opposed to Europe, you can travel so long as your passport has not expired i.e. yu have to leave the EU no later than the date your passport expires.

As long as it doesn't expire while you're in an EU country then I think it's fine to come back the day before it expires. Mind you if it's due to run out soon, might as well apply for it now anyway.
