I think it's interesting that you expressed your question in the most serious of terms, yet all the atheists who responded made light of your quite serious inquiry.

Jimi Hendrix engaged in more reflection that this bunch. "Let us not talk falsley now, for the hour is getting late."

Glad you enjoyed this. The thing is, we've all seen this question a ridiculous number of times. And we all know at least a few of the many, many flaws in this argument, such as the possibility that would condemn you to more extreme damnation for worshipping Jesus rather than no one. Thus we either have cut and paste answers or remind everyone how much we've seen this via the drinking game. And we also enjoy the superiority often claimed by the asker, particularly when their god might see these displays as prideful.

Well let's look at this God figure an assume for the sake of argument that this bible God does exist and is EXACTLY as the bible says.

Would it bother me that I have pissed all over a God that is no better then HITLER was? A God that actually makes what Hitler did look like loving kindness in comparison? Would it bother me one bit that I have declaired a being that has murdered over 32 MILLION people in the bible alone an enemy?
Could I sit back and accept a God that would say oh you didn't follow this or that religion well BURN IN HELL FOREVER? Could I honestly accept that as loving or good?

HELL NO!
I can't speek for Christians but I can not follow / serve/ or believe in a God that shows such a blatently sadistic nature and tries to mask it with oh but I love you talk! TALK IS CHEAP! ACTIONS SPEAK FAR LOUDER THEN WORDS!
The actions of this God are sadistic, brutal and POINTLESS!

The real qustion is how can you support the behavior of this God? If you support evil doesn't that make you too evil?
The soldiers that were just following orders from Hitler were still charged with WAR CRIMES! Even though they were only following what their leader was saying!

The same should be true for all theists that support and justify the evil of this God!

Pascal's wager:

"If god exists, it's infinitely better to believe, since you get heaven instead of hell for eternity. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter since you're dead anyway. So overall it's better to believe"

This is, of course, false.

Some of the problems with the argument:

* The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)

* The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell

* The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else

* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.

* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (some people pray several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.

* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?

* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

Little lady, why don't you play Devil's Advocate and answer the opposite question - what if YOU are the one who's wrong? I'll be perfectly honest: I'd be furious if I came face to face with the God you suppose exists! I'd have a lot of very hard questions to ask that monster - starting with why did my cousin, one of the staunchest Christians in the world, give birth to a baby with no brain?
But that's really moot, because I see no reason to accept religion any more than to accept the story of the Easter Bunny as fact, or Santa Claus. I do see plenty of reason, however, to reject religion. More evil has been done and is still being done in the name of religion in this world than from all other causes combined. Sorry, hon, but that's the way I see it.

The interesting thing to this question is that when asking "What if there is a god", you automatically assume the Christian god is the God. What if there is a god, and it turns out to be Allah? Then you'd be in the same boat as the rest of us.

I also find it interesting that you automatically assume athiests "scoff and mock" Jesus. Athiests don't necessarily dispute Jesus's existence, nor that he was a good man who did great things. They just dispute his claim that he was the son of god. Jews do the same thing--do you think Jews scoff at or mock Jesus?

How about this: What if there is a god and it turns out to be something none of us ever imagined? And what if that god is even more merciful than yours? Perhaps everyone could have an afterlife then, and not just the select few that subscribe to one specific set of beliefs.

It occurs to me that you should probably examine your own beliefs a bit more thoroughly before questioning the beliefs of others.

It's not that I REFUSE to believe. Not believing isn't a protest. It's just that I don't believe. If there was a God, I would think He would be smart enough to understand perfectly well why I don't believe. I don't believe in your God for the same reason you don't believe in Varuna, Visvakarman, Vasudeva, Asvinikumara, Bhisma, Yama, Dhanvantari, Aine, Cliodna, Pele, Danavas, Gauri, Parnasavari, etc. etc.
There are tens if not hundreds of thousands of Gods that are believed in by one religion or another. What makes you so sure that YOUR God is the right God? What are you going to say if you die and one or more of those OTHER Gods are waiting for you to explain why you don't believe in them?
You and I are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer God than you do.

This is known as Pascal's wager. If I am wrong god punish me, if you are wrong oh well. That works only if you are the only one claiming truth behind god. What if when you get to heaven Allah is there and is angry that you believed in Jesus? or any of the the 10,000+ gods. You chances of picking the correct religion are less than .02%

~~~ Butterfly,,,, Respectfully and seriously,,,,Ask yourself the Very Same Question, except replace the word "god" with allah,,, and "jesus" with mohammed and you will see the folly in your Logic. Playing your "What if,,,, Game" is a pointless exercise in Intellectual Masturbation. Without my looking at any of the answers you've received I am sure they reflect my assertion.
