No. Your question is a bit confused, too.

The 3" chamber is simply a measurement of how long a shell you can chamber in the barrel. It has nothing to do with how many shells will fit in the magazine. The 3" chamber will only hold ONE shell at a time regardless of what length shells you're using.

Shotgun capacities are measured in the shortest common shell length ie the standard 2 3/4" shell. The 870 holds four in its magazine. Subtract your 1/4" from each of those (if you were loading 2 1/2" shells) and you get an extra 1" in your magazine....so you wouldn't be able to wedge one more 2 1/2" shell into the tube even if you could find them.

I don't know of anyone still making them, though, so unless you load your own.

You come out far better and far cheaper to simply buy a cheapo magazine extender tube. You save yourself the potential misfeeding probs of the shorter shells, too.

No. You will not be able to load more shells by using 2.5" instead of 3". Reason being, you can load a maximum of 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine/"tube" this mean you would gain a single inch in magazine space by using 2.5", you still need 1.5" more (roughly) to add another shell.

Your shotgun comes with a removable magazine plug, without it you could load more in the magazine, BUT It may be illegal to remove this plug in your area. I know where I live, it is illegal to hunt waterfowl with this plug removed, but if you are shooting clay targets or deer hunting (in certain areas) you may remove the plug. CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS before altering any firearm or any part of any firearm. In some states and countries I have heard that removing the plug at anytime may be illegal. Be careful and be 100% sure what your laws are before removing the magazine plug.

In the sources below is a forum where they discussed removing the magazine plug in an 870.

With the plug removed you will probably be able to fit 4 or 5, 3" shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. If the Plug is removed and you use 2.5" shells you might be able to squeeze 5-6 shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. So using 2.5" shells may only allow you to gain 1 extra shell compared to the 3".

If youre asking if you can put more shells into the magazine with shorter shells-no. The gun will only hold 5 no matter what you do to it. It holds one in the chamber and 4 in the bottom. If the plug is in, it only hold two in the bottom. It doesnt matter if the shells are that much shorter, because there just isnt enough room. I would say that for the military, with the shotguns that hold like 15 or some crazy number, then it might be able to hold like one more.

Yes. You should be able to put 7 shells in instead of 5.
