If home remedies worked as well as prescription meds there would be no point in the prescription meds existing. They're expensive because they work.
Yes there are pills available from vets - these are preventative measures only, only use them if your pet/home is definitely flea-free. They won't be that much cheaper though.
I really would advise against using anything from a pet store, despite what people may say. They're cheap for a reason - pet stores are not allowed to sell the appropriate meds, so they often don't work or have very limited efficacy. Some are also very dangerous, I've seen bad reactions and death in cats and dogs.
Please don't start feeding your pet garlic or any of the other weird home remedies people may suggest on here. I'm afraid drug companies charge higher prices for prescription flea treatment because it's reliable and safe - unlike petshop stuff.
Are you using spot-on stuff? (Frontline, Revolution or Advantage/ix) This is much less hassle than spray or shampoo, although more expensive than spray.
Sorry, but keeping animals and environments flea-free isn't very cheap to do properly.

Some of the answers on here are not very informed.Even the so called experts.I have had dogs all my life an my Dad an Granddad always gave our dogs Brewers yeast tablets.Especially during the warm months. It makes your Dog taste bad to fleas. You can get them at almost any pet department or pet store. To get rid of them in the house if you have carpet or rugs use Moth Crystals on the carpets an rugs.If you can't find them mothballs work just as well.Just place them in a plastic bag an hit them with a hammer.Spread on your carpets an leave for a few hours.Vacumn your rugs or leave them longer if you have a bad problem. The yeast tablets want work over night but will work over a period of time if you keep your dog on them. The Moth Crystals may or may not have to be done periodacly. These are the cheapest an easiest ways to keep fleas out of your house and off your dog.Just stick with it an a couple of months later you will be pleased.{an not spending a fortune to do it} Good Luck

I have a problem with fleas on my baby too and I agree the medicine is expensive. What I do is bath him regularly with a flea shampoo, I keep his hair short, I minimize how much time he spends outside, and I use a aromatherapy recipe I found online. It's a combination of almond oil, spearmint, peppermint, and grapefruit essential oil. It makes a spray and works ok, it does take maintenance and makes my dog minty and tingly all over. You could also check online for some other ideas if you haven't looked their yet. Good luck :-)

You could try tea tree oil soap...it works pretty good, but you might have to leave it on for several minutes to make sure you suffocate those suckers.....My cats don't stay still that long. The real issue is getting their eggs to die though.
You can also put a lil of that soap into a steam cleaner and go over your carpet. So far...the only sure thing for my animals was using Frontline.

Check out diatemecious earth. It's inexpensive, can be found online, does not need a prescription, and has no chemical action. It's totally natural, and will not injure any animal.
