In reality very few individuals (even among the Haradi) learn for their entire lives.

Their are many who learn in their early twenty's but by around the age of 25 the individuals start only going to Kollel part time.

Some become Teachers of younger students, others join other Jewish professions such as Kashrut inspection, and ritual slaughtering, etc.

And their are those that go in to the secular workforce.

The point is that even while they learn for a long time they almost all contribute to the work force.

Jewish men are supposed to learn just for the sake of learning and fulfilling God's will. (Woman do not have this requirement. Still, they are supposed to learn enough to be competent in Jewish law).
Even so, there are some practical benefits. As my teacher, likes to put it, you don't need to know enough to become a rabbi, but you should know enough to know when you need to consult a rabbi. So the kollel man (or any serious student) knows which situations are strictly forbidden, which ones are completely permissable, and which ones need the expert advice of his rabbi. If you are trying to live a life in strict accordance with Jewish law, you every aspect of your life needs to be done the right way, from cooking a meal (kosher), to going to work (honesty, sabbath), and even to going to the bathroom (blessings).
