I am currently studying world religions, and I need to conduct some research on what happens at a monestary when someone goes there before marriage.

Can someone help me?

Monastery is for the monk who train to be enlightened. There are female and male monastery. If you want to worship only, go to the temple. When you apply for monk-ship, you go to monastery. To be enlightened is very hard training; you must follow strict rules - celibacy is required : you cannot marry or if you're married, you must live separated.

www.buddhanet.net I'm not sure what you're asking, but the Vinaya is what covers sexuality and behavior within the Sangha (i.e. monks and nuns). So look up the "Vinaya" and you'll get your answers if that's what you're seeking. Note: it varies in interpretation between Hinayana and Mahayana.
