In 1933, inventor Charles Chapman’s patented emulsifying machine allowed regular mayonnaise to be evenly blended with cheaper dressings and more than 20 different spices (plus sugar). The result was Miracle Whip, which debuted at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Promising to create "Salad Miracles with Miracle Whip Salad Dressing," the Whip was an instant hit (Note: It’s not known if the dressing is responsible for any non-salad-related miracles.)

The main difference between Miracle Whip and mayonnaise are the sweeteners: high-fructose corn syrup and sugar are the fourth and fifth ingredients, respectively, of Miracle Whip.

I never heard of it until I move to Canada.

Taste them both side by side. The sweeter one is Miracle Whip.
The sugar is what keeps me away fro it.

I still prefer Mayonnaise. I never use MW.

Miracle whip doesn't contain as many eggs and is sweeter. It is often used in creamy salad dressings such as thousand island. Especially in the potato salads that have a sweeter flavor combined with sweet pickles as opposed to potato salads that use mayonnaise and dill pickles for a more savory flavor. Personally I prefer 1/2 and 1/2 with the sweeter pickles.

Mayo is good for some recipes where you want the flavor to be in the background (like deviled eggs or sandwiches). Miracle Whip has a tangy flavor and is good if you want it to be part of the overall taste of the dish. It is used in fruit and jello salads though, in some families.

"A sandwich just isn't a sandwich without the tangy zip of Miracle Whip salad dressing. The bread spread from Kraft." Many people use it as a dressing for tuna SALAD, chicken SALAD, potato SALAD......shall I go on. It gives that little tang and adds a sweetness to the dish.

Miracle whip! Mayonnaise smells funny and taste worse. I believe they call it salad dressing because people use it in potato & macaroni salad, at least I do. I HATE mayonnaise.
