I heard that might be due to registry problems so I installed registry mechanic but even then the problem remains.

I have avg antrivirus, spyware doctor and registry mechanic installed.

Hmmmm...need more details. If you have many many icons it could be you have too many prgms. running in the background. If this is true go to start>run>type in "msconfig"(w/out the quote marks)>startup tab and uncheck some of the un-needed programs. This will not delete the program it is still there, it is just not running in the background.
Make sure you search first for which programs are unnecessary for your system.

YOu have Norton or Mcafee ?
