When mankind discovers a path to actual eternal life by simply not dying. Fear of death is the single unifying factor in all religions. That fear is what allows or makes people rationalize a version of reality that is clearly at odds with what is evident. Without that fear, all the moralism of religions loses the force that makes people follow it.
I used to think that would be a good thing. Now I realize that most people are simply not sufficiently evolved to live in a world where ones conduct is based on actual morality and not fear of retribution.

That's illogical. Religion is a concept that is understood (or not) according to the ability of the mind perceiving it, which is generally dependent (in this life) upon the ability of the body and brain to function properly. If anything within the brain is disrupted physically or chemically, then the mind follows. Pathologies are brought into religion, or creates interpretations, not the other way around.
If you label religion as a "mental disorder", then by the same logic, you'd have to also toss in "philosophy" and "logic" itself since all are thought processes that result from the functioning (or lack thereof) of mind and body (i.e. brain, sensory organs, etc.).

Religion would have to be strictly defined.
In the DSM-IV, for example, there are plenty of abnormalities (the paraphilae, for example) that aren't considered mental health issues unless and until they impair functioning.

When their religion commands them to lie, falsely accuse, make false treaties, steal & murder for their god.
And the families of victims recognize this as a mental disorder.
Osama Bin Ladan or Cho have a mental disorder. They aren't demon possessed. Of course I'm being sarcastic, I believe the opposite myself.

Everything else is a disorder why not that too? Much money is made 'treating' all these disorders. We will all have one.

I think maybe later on in the future there is a possibility of it becoming known as a myth. Atheism seems to be growing or at least I hope so.
