Female Parrots don't need to have males with them in order to lay eggs. As mysterious as it is, this is only answer I can think of. And it has been true before. Alot of times, when there is no male around the female, as in this case, the bird forms a relationship with you, as they prune your eyelashes and hair as they would a mate. You're her mate. She is so intrigued with you that she laid an egg. I know it is the first time in 16 years, but perhaps, obviously you had her a while, if you had some extra time off and were spending more time at home with your gray, that could be why. Anyways, as my experience goes, its because they portray their relationship with you as being a male female one, and she laid an egg. Don't worry, you're not the father :) All it means is that your bird is fond of you and you're doing a wonderful job if she is so secure

Many female birds lay eggs when they feel like they are very loved and are attached to their owner. This means they view you as their "mate." Which can be a disturbing fact to some owners, however she's only laying an egg because she loves you so much! Remeber, 16 years is young for a bird with a life span of 80 years!

I don't know the reason, but my African Gray just did the same thing. Also 16 years old and I always thought "he" was a male b/c he's such a good talker. I was just hoping it didn't mean there was something wrong with the bird.

All congo african gray parrots have pink tails, even women individuals. seems such as you have somewhat lady, congratulations! a pair tricks to offer up or sluggish the egg laying earlier it turns right into a topic.. do not eliminate the egg till she has stopped paying interest to it. it might desire to soak up to 20 days or so yet will shop her from laying greater in maximum situations. shop a distinctive eye on how plenty "sunlight hours" your chicken is getting. attempt to make particular she has greater evening hours than day hours. this might require darkening the room she's in around 7pm and making particular it remains dark till 7 or 8am the next day. regularly birds will start off breeding rituals in spring because of fact the days get longer and nights get shorter yet for the reason that we shop them interior we tend to tutor on lights furniture whilst it certainly gets dark so they have plenty longer days than they might interior the wild. even be certain to maintain her properly fed with particularly some end result and greens as she's laying eggs because it incredibly is amazingly stressful for greys and maximum birds usually. shop her from any stressful circumstances to boot. desire this helps! :)

She must have all the right conditions..funny as I see someone elses congo grey also did, and so did mine! I have had Shamu over 4 years, shes about 16 yrs old and wild caught. She just laid eggs, her and her mate are both sitting in the nest box, I don't dare to disturb them to find out how many, she's sitting really tight. One egg is out from under either of them. This new to me, so will see what happens

That is strange but it happens. my neighbors have an African grey and they had her for years and she never laid an egg and then all of a sudden there was an egg there....and no male bird. their vet said its prob b/c the bird was stressed (my neighbor was pregnant (the bird was unhappy)) or just maturing. i think it kind of work like chickens....they still lay eggs even though they arent fertilized. good luck w/ everything!!!

she can lay unfertilized eggs anyway. birds do that all the time, especially chickens. did she lay eggs before? maybe she just reached her sexual maturity. since grays live so long, that might be the case.
