I recently got a letter in the mail stating that I had to attend jury duty. Unfortunately, I was very busy being a full-time student and forgot about jury duty? Am I going to be in tons of trouble? If so, what are the consequences? Is there anyway to get myself out of this mess?

Don't sweat it, and for Pete's sake don't call them! They'll eventually just send you a summons again when your name comes up. Theoretically you are in contempt of court and subject to a fine, but the courts rarely hassle people who miss one or two summons (they have more important things to do). If you habitually ignore summons sent to the same address, they will eventually come after you, usually through the DMV, but don't sweat just a single miss, and if you get another summons, and you have an attack of conscience, you can check in for jury duty at that time.

I missed reporting for jury duty once too. I called them and explained the situation and they let me make it up. If you don't do something about it you can be cited or arrested for contempt of court, so you need to take care of this. I'm betting if you call the court, give them a halfway decent excuse like (fill in the blank) came up and you missed your date, apologize for it, and ask if you can reschedule then they'll work with you.

Not attending a jury duty is contempt of court but you can be excused if you have valid reasons such as being a full-time student.

I did jury duty in college and it was fun. It's bad karma. They give you another letter. But, there is a wide list if you want to get out of it.

There will not be a bench warrant out for your arrest. A bench warrant is only issued when a person fails to appear on their own personal case. They do not issue warrants they fine you. In Calif I believe the fine is around $1500.00. You can contact them or wait to hear from them again.

I got a bench warrant notice when I "forgot" to submit my notice the day before I was to report. I had to fill out a card with the reason. I said I was away and unable to use a phone.

A warrant can be issued for your arrest. You might want to call the court and explain what happened.

The court will issue a bench-warrant and if you are ever
pulled over for a traffic ticket or something then you will
be arrested....Call the clerk of court and ask what they
want you to do...
