They are technically a mixed breed. Unfortunately people are making big money on "designer" breeds:

A mutt is simply a dog with mixed breeding as opposed to a pure bred dog. Many times however the term mutt actually refers to a dog of mixed but unknown breeding. Many people have said that "Mutt" dogs make the BEST dogs. So there is no offense intended, but those are the facts. I have not had the pleasure to interact with a Shorkie, so I don't know if they are loving. I know yorkies are incredibly cute and loving, so I would think a Shorkie would be too.

Any breed crossed with another breed is a MUTT ! ! !

Schoodles, cockapoo, Shorkie all of them are MUTTS! ! !

Even some AKC registered pups are MUTTS. Poor breeding that results in many faults. Pet quality. Mutt.

Loving has nothing to do with whether or not a dog is a mutt or not. I have a full breed German Shepherd but she is a MUTT cause she has so many faults. She was a rescue.

Unless a dog or puppy has Pedigree Papers they are probably just pet quality. There are very few dogs than can meet the standards of the breed unless they come from a competent breeder. One who knows the breed and does everything in their power to produce the best dogs possible. Breeding out faults & strengthening the positive.

A Shorkie is a fun name given to a dog of mixed-breed parentage, in this case most likely a mix of Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier. By technical standards, it is what most people would consider a "mutt", which is just another name for a dog of unknown or mixed breeds. They should make fine puppies, just be sure that you aren't paying any more than 100 dollars for one, because you could probably find the exact same mix or one very similar at a shelter for less, and save a life in the process.

First, "mutt" and loving are not mutually exclusive. Mixed breeds are dogs and have the same temperament range as purebreeds.

The reason everything that you read says that "shorkies" are mutts is because they are. There is no recognized, pure breed called a shorkie. The parents are two different breeds. There's nothing wrong with having a mixed breed; it's certainly nothing to get defensive about.

What is a Shorkie? If it is a cross between two pure bred dogs of different breeds, then yes it is a mutt. Just because it is a mutt or a mix-breed dog doesn't mean it can't be loving or a good pet. It just means that it's not a pure bred dog.

Because they ARE a mutt. They're a mixed-breed. They're not purebred. They are not "a breed". You don't "breed Shorkies to Shorkies and get Shorkies".

You breed a shih-tzu to a yorkie and get a mutt, give it a cute name, and convince people you have something "special".

They can be great pets. But they're mutts. And people who intentionally breed mutts (and then intentionally mislead people into thinking it's a "designer breed") are contributors to the deaths of millions of dogs every year, in the name of "greed".

There is nothing wrong with a mutt - mutts are very loving - but a Shorkie is a mixed breed and not a purebred dog. A mutt is any dog that is not a purebred.

Any mixed breed or descendant of a mixed breed dog is a MUTT. It doesn't matter how "loving" they are, they are MUTTS, i.e. not purebred dogs. Those individuals who are producing mutts and dubbing them with "Designer dog" names are motivated solely by greed and are not only perpetrating an unscrupulous scam on the public, but doing harm to the very dogs they breed. They do NO health screenings or genetic testing at all. They do not even breed to a standard, (because there is none). It's a shame, really.

A mutt is a mixture of 2 or more breeds such as a Shih tzu yorkie mix or poodle/lab. Being a mutt has nothing to do with being loving, just usually randomly bred, and in the case of Fad dogs, poodle/labs etc for the $$. Poodle, labs, goldens all have inheritable health problems, as do all breeds, and few if any people who mix breeds check for them so your chance is higher getting a dog with problems than going to a reputable breeder who screens for all health problems in their breed.

It is a mutt because it is not a purebreed, it is a mix of breeds. Just because it's a mutt doesn't mean they can't be loving puppies.
