Well, this is just an opinion, however I think it has to do with the ability, and desire of the male to protect and care for the group....? Imagine a dog pack without the alpha dog? Imagine humans, which are NOT animals without the alpha male/female.....murder, rape, hate, frenzy? What do YOU know, think?

As with any group, community, organisation. In order for it to function and survive within its own environment, something/someone needs to provide guidance or leadership.
Therefore the Alpha male plays the role of leader, ensuring that the pack/herd/community/society works together as a collective.
Strangely however, even in the a human society whereby there are many Alpha males, the murder, rape, hate and frenzy exists, but on a bigger scale.
And humans are considered intelligent. ?

The alpha male is one of two things: most strategically capable or outright strongest. A weaker male can take the position if his strategy in fighting can overcome the strength of a stronger male.
The alpha male is the primary and often only male breeder in the pack. Since the position requires brains and/or brawn, this selects strongly for brains and brawn (assuming the alpha flipflops between the two as the alpha male is successively replaced). Other males are prevented from breeding unless food is extremely plentiful -- then a beta may be allowed as well.
The alpha male sets the direction of the pack. Where he goes, the rest follow. He rarely has time alone to himself. He is the figurehead of the pack. In encountering unknown situations, he is likely to be the first to approach the unknown, taking the risk, but also the potential reward. It is him who determines what is good and what is to be avoided. He also leads in behaviors that are 'traditional' or of some ritual purpose. Alphas initiate most howls;others will only howl if separated from the pack and need a guide home, and even then the alpha initiates the response.
I could never be the alpha, oy. I'm much more an omega -- stress relief, jokester, and initiator of play.
Yeah, my answer's wolf-oriented. But, um, look at my avatar.

Alpha male means "top, leader." In humans the alpha male isn't the strongest or most violent (besides maybe on the football field). He's the smart/social/friendly/leader type. Sometimes the alpha is a female with people. The traits that make an alpha are different for different species. Murder, rape, hate is traits of an idiot, not an alpha.

Praying Mantis females are dominant, although since they are invertebrates so I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.
