Have you had him checked out at the vet?
I have two cats that get bored. Sometimes (most often in the middle of the night), they will go into the bottom of the stairwells (we have two--one from the basement to the main floor, and the other from the main floor to the second floor). Because of the way each of the stairwells are made, they have really good echo effects. We have had to listen to both of them (individually, thank God) yowling up into those stairwells just to hear the echo effect.
If you yell at the younger one, she will go away never to do it again that night. If you yell at the older one, she will keep on howling even louder until you get out of bed and start going after her. Then she runs and hides.
On a very few memorable nights, we have had them taking turns doing this until we managed to catch them and lock them into the laundry room for the night.
So, your cat doing this could be a bid for attention, or sheer boredom, or revenge. I find cats are VERY GOOD at revenge!

Is he in the room by himself or are there any other cats with him? He might be afraid of something he see. I think he is in pain best to take him to the vet and find out for sure instead of worrying about him, finding out will give you peace of mind knowing that you are doing all you can and what's best for him. Don't wait too long, he may in real bad pain, he wouldn't cry if all was okay.

nothing is wrong with him.. he could just want attention, or some special treat or food. our oldest cat gets the treat of going out sometimes and if he wants out and you're not putting him out, he cries and cries.... he also has a thing of getting up early in the morning and when he wants a treat of milk, he knocks things over and then cries in your ears until he gets some milk. it's also just a way of them talking to you, unless it gets annoying. our youngest cat is taking after the oldest cat and starting to cry for the heck of it, but he just usually wants attention.

He might be lonely or might just wants to talk to you. I have a cat that does that and then when I go to pet him he just runs. I just think sometimes he just want people around. Try spending some time with him or bring him into the room with you.
Good Luck

I'm sure there is nothing wrong tho you might want to take him to the vet for a checkup. I know my cat will do that when my other cat is trying to pounce on her. So its possible the other cat is picking on her.

My cat does this, too...We often find her sitting in the closet, looking at the corner, meowing at it. My daughter is convinced that she's talking to ghosts...
My guess is that there's nothing wrong with him, unless he's really crying all the time, regardless of whether or not you're with him.

He either wants out, misses a former owner, misses a child or could be in heat. They also see spirits too. Just suggestions......
