General Patton and McArthur both agreed with your point, and their views were not tolerated. However, people got tired of war and it was time for peace. That's why the war did not extend to The former Soviet Union, China and North Korea in the late '40's and early '50's. Even though we got into a war with Korea anyways when they chose to invade the South. The Russians stole nuclear technology from us through spies. Otherwise they would not have been able to build the bomb so quickly after we built ours. They had enough information from the Germans to build one eventually, but it wouldn't have been so quickly.

If Patton and Curtis LeMay had their way (and possibly MacArthur), your plan would've been carried out. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and global suicide was avoided. Regarding the 'let' comment, the Soviets had spies on the Manhattan Project as well as other 'leaks.' The Pandora's Box was opened and there was a point of no return.

first, we did not willingly give the ussr nuclear information-that was by some guy who thought world matters should be played like a sport and that the teams should be even, so he leaked the information to them.
secondly, the usa did not want to obliterate the soviet union. we had just come out of a war where we were allies with these guys.

Perhaps you've heard of the united nations? They wouldn't take too kindly to the US just clobbering the USSR.
Also invasion of the USSR historically is not an easy thing to accomplish.

Spies in the right places stole the info and passed them to the Soviets, some who were Americans.
Some believed that such a weapon should not be in the hands of only one nation

Actually the USSR didn't acquire them they stole them. Ethel and Sid Rosenberg stole the formula and gave it to the soviets. Hence leading to the cold war. It wasn't given to them they took it through russian spies.

Very simple. The U.S. only stand up against those countries that it can bully. Unfortunately America's bullying tactics never worked against Russia, China, India, and Pakistan. So these countries now have nuclear weapons.

I admire your subtle approach to things. Do you deal with issues the same way in your house? Secondly, what do you mean "let"? You obviously lack a bit of knowledge about the history of nuclear weapons.

The USSR was right behind us in this technology. I think it was Patton who wanted to continue on to Russia. Got him in a little bit of trouble.

Leave russia alone, and they will leave the us alone. the only reason the ussr apparently dosen't like the us, is because you guys just wanted to beat the crap out of them. and now that they have nukes, bush is just cowering away from them. thats the only reason he is "worried" about Iran. He just wants to seem busy so that the ussr dosen't clobber him.
