Hi All!

My cat has diarrhea, I woke up this morning to find it on my rug and all over her rear end. This is the first day I've seen it, so it hasn't been going on for a long time. Are there any home remedies I can try? I am guessing she is a bit dehydrated, am I able to give her Pedialyte? Maybe cook her a boneless skinless chicken breast instead of giving her the regular wet/dry cat food? If the diarrhea persists, I am going to take her to the vet no later than Wednesday, but I want to see if there is anything I can do to help her from home first.

In the past she has had anal gland problems---they don't express on their own, so the vet would have to do it for her. Normally if the diarrhea lasts more than 2 days and she is extremely sensitive around her rear end, it is the glands and I take her to have them expressed. She doesn't seem to be having the same symptoms as-of-yet ie: the tenderness/sensitivity.

Any suggestions to try at home? Thanks for your help!!

You've already named all the appropriate 'home treatments' - bland food, pedialyte and taking her to the vet if no improvement within 24 hours! These are the best and safest things to do.

Also take her to the vet if any blood appears in the diarrhoea or if it gets worse, or vomiting also occurs - or indeed any other symptoms. As you say she will be dehyrdrated, so be sure she is eating and drinking properly.

A 24 hour fast is best - just water. That will give her digestive tract a rest.

Fasting is recommended by Charles Loops, DVM.

Jean Hovfe,DVM recommends using baby meat foods (read the label - no ONION or garlic powder) when feeding resumes the next day. Chicken and turkey are the most digestible.

Roger DeHaan, DVM recommends giving slippery elm (available in health food stores). 1 capsule twice a day. Mix in warm water and give at time of feeding. "Slippery elm is a nutritive herb that heals, soothes and nourishes the inflamed digestive tract."

Diarrhea is a sign of being dehydrated. Give her some unflavored pedialyte.

This happened to one of my cats, I stopped all food for 24 hours and it cleared it up, just give her water, or bland food like rice, it she still has it though I would take her to the vet
