I am thinking about taking a holiday alone at some point this year to get my head together and just have a bit of me time away from the office. I just wondered if anyone has done the same and have any recommendations on where to go.

I am open to any suggestions, i do prefer beach holidays but could be swayed.

Thanks x

The Cook Islands

My first trip out of the country we stayed here.

in the Pole house. 180 degree view of a beautiful lagoon from the deck and from the queen sized loft.

You will love it. I promise. So much cheaper than Tahiti or Fiji also.

The island is like Maui 40 years ago. Hot spot for Europeans but they speak English.

Food is cheap and so is the Australian wine.

If you want to save money and meet more people then I would suggest staying at the hostle on Muri Beach.

I met many people who were staying there and loved it. It is right on the main Beach.

Have fun!

I have taken several holidays alone. Some were really good and some were really awful. The worst was Turkey. I went to Kusidasi and Istanbul. It would have been okay with a guy but it was hard alone with the culture. My best trip alone was probably Ibiza. I met lots of people and had a lot of fun. Went to the spa, hung out at the beach and went to pubs and clubs. I also really enjoyed Costa del Sol. I went to Thailand alone too and didn't have a very good time. I think this was mosly because I got lonely and didn't meet a lot of people but I still made the most of it by staying at a nice hotel, going to spas and shopping. I have been to Dubai alone a few times too and had fun since it is like the shopping capital of the earth and when I felt social there are lots of good pubs and night clubs.

The thing I have enjoyed about traveling alone is that I can do what I want when I want. I have also only had to worry about my budget and had fun treating myself to nice hotel rooms and spa time.

Vacationing alone can be quite expensive as room rates are considerably higher for singles than for double occupancy. In my opinion the best value for your money could be a coach tour with a "twin share" program which matches you up with another single traveler of the same sex. You simply share a room but otherwise it allows you all the "me" time you want, while giving you the option of sharing some of your experiences with compatible others if you should feel so inlined. If you like beaches, I can most highly recommend "Australian Scenic Tours". They offer a variety of twin share programs and my absolute favourite was a magnificent tour of Queensland which included several beautiful beach resorts but also many other great points of interest. Their website is http://www.pacificislandtravel.com/australia/tours/australian_scenic.html I have traveled a lot, always alone, and have found "twinshare" travel the most enjoyable and the very best value, allowing me to see places I could not have been able to afford as a single traveler.

I find coaching holidays are the perfect escape for me. Most are based in one place with excursions included. You'd have the choice of mixing with people or missing the trips and keeping to your own agenda. It also saves you from having to drive. I personally like visiting cathedrals - a great way of escaping from the bustle of everyday life.

places like thailand & india are great to go to alone because loads of backpackers are out there doing the same thing. And you hook up with people at hostels and travel together for a bit until want to go somewhere else and then you hook up with another group at another hostel. People will always welcome you joining them for a few days or so

I went to Jersey for a long weekend alone. Loved it and was a nice break for everyone and everything.

mix it up, beach holidays are good but its also nice to get lost in beautiful cities. (Barcelona ticks both boxes)
