Children like music and will respond to it quicker. ALSO....when , as an adult do you have to identify what letter comes after what? Where is this a necessary skill? Maybe if you are pulled over by a police officer when DUI? The reason you learn the alphabet is so that you can eventually learn how to read and write. As long as children learn them and move on to the next step then it doesn't matter. At least the people singing the song under their breath know the alphabet.

No I dont. I learned to sing the ABCs and I do just fine figuring out what letter comes next as does my daughter who is 5 and learned the same why. Yeah some times I space out and have to go thorough the entire alphabet to figure it out but I thought that was normal and I dont sing them I say them. Why would it matter if someone sang the ABCs under their breath anyway? Maybe that day they are in touch with their inner child.
Besides kids learn better when they are having fun and to most kids singing is fun.

But the easiest way to remember something is to associate something else with it. The ABC song is one of those ways to teach kids the alphabet. For a chile, learning 26 letters and in what order they go in is pretty tough. Teachers don't have that much time to teach each student 26 letters, so they put it into song. Eventually, they will repeat it enough, and they will know what goes where. You probably sang the song when you were a kid, and didn't you turn out fine?

I thought LMNO was one letter, for the longest time. But, I also knew the separated letters. Your brain is like that. Or mine :)

Anyway, it's a whole learning experience. Sing the song, AND have letters everywhere - great and beautiful and funny and informative alphabet books abound and you read them with your toddler and all the while you're talking about the pictures or what have you, the letter is sitting there getting drilled into their minds. You don't have to test them or structure the learning. Just mention the letters now and then. Over the years, this will add up to a lot of mentioning.
Put index cards with a single word on each all over the house, "REFRIGERATOR" on the fridge, "Wall" on a few walls, "TOYS" on a toy box or shelf.

When you read regular stories, one letter per page is often big. Mention it, casually mention the sound/s it makes, and move on to reading. Don't quiz, just pass on your great store of knowledge.

And sing, always sing.

Kids love it and get an early sense of mastery from it. Get Sesame Streets early tapes (DVDS?) about learning about letters, and see some incredible videos based on the alphabet song.

No I don't agree. It's more fun and easier to learn the song. What kind of parent wouldn't teach their child the ABC song? That child certainly won't have a very fun childhood. Poor kid. I'm 39 and I learned the ABC song and guess what, I can say the alphabet just fine.

No I don't agree.

It's easier for children to learn what is fun. Learning the ABC song doesn't mean they will sing their ABC's forever. It's just that, they learned a song.

When they start preschool or kindergarten, even if they've been sing the song for 2 years, the still dont KNOW their ABC's. They will learn each letter, how to write it, what comes before and after, all with out song. Usually they are taught the ABC's out of order.

No, disagree. It is all by memory regardless if it is song or talking. I was taught it singing but don't have to sing it to know that X comes after W. Both of my children can tell you what letters are where as well. Kids learn so much better when it is fun for them. Who wants to learn something that seems boring? I don't know many kids if any that do. Heck, even adults learn better when it is interesting.

No, I don't agree. I learned it by singing but by the time I started elementary I knew the order of the letters without singing. My daughter is 7 and learned it through singing it, she hasn't sang it in 4 years now but she knows the alphabet and what letter comes next.

I still have to say/sing the abc's to sometimes figure out what letter comes after what. I dont' think it would make a difference.
