Here's an interesting conversation I had with a fanatical neighbor.
He says my beliefs and my place of worship are "Weird." I asked him why and he was stuck. That's OK, I knew. It's because there are so few of us.
Geeeeeee, why do you suppose that is????
Because his Catholic Church killed most of us off three hundred years ago !!!!!!!!!!!
A church killing? Now that's WEIRD!

"Being a heretic" has a MUCH narrower focus than that!
It means having a different opinion about:
The same God,
Within the same Church,
Using the same scriptures.
Heresy is, IMO, denial of personal insight.
Personal faith is a one-on-one relationship. Even in the secular world, no two people will have exactly the same relationship with a third person. How then can any two people be expected to have the same relationship with God?
How many people throughout church history who were originally branded as heretics now have the word "Saint" in front of their name?
Heresy is nothing more than "church politics!"

Historically speaking, "heresy" is defined by the winners in a conflict, whether they are right or wrong.
It comes from the Greek term hAIRESIS, and referred to any group that had tenets distinctive to it, whether a school (of philosophy), a party, or a faction, or a sect.
Another meaning of the Greek term is "opinion, dogma."
Christianity was originally called heresy. Acts 24:5, 14 and Acts 28:22. At the time, the Jews were in the position to define the word.

Yeah, but "having a different opinion THAN GOD" is probably not a good stance to take.
As a Fundie myself, I understand that people do have their own opinions - and that's there right, and no, I won't try to kill you or judge you over it - God WILL judge you over it, I'll just be a good friend and warn you about the judgment to come. How you respond to the warning is up to you, and not my responsibility.

Actually, no, that is not the proper definition of the term, heretic.
Heretics stubbornly hold onto beliefs that were contrary to the Christian church's teaching, despite church's efforts to correct these beliefs. Heretics persist in their mistake even after their faults had been shown to them.
As the Apostle Paul admonished, Christians are to avoid those declared to be heretics.

I didn't know that, but I doubt a small matter of semantics is going to stop the American Taliban from their hate campaign here on R&S.
They're Righteous because They have The Lord, don't ya know?
Pity they don't have any friends, but that's another matter, entirely...

Yeah? Try telling that to Torquemada. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

I come from a long line of heretics. I am proud of that. Yes, the Catholic Church tried to kill us off around 1700 but they failed.

Yes, that's what it means.
Gee, I wish I had a deep involved answer. But I don't. Herecy means having a different opinion.

Organized religion has always tried to repress the masses and free-thinkers. It still goes on today.
