Electronic circuits require the direct current to flow in a specific direction for the components to work. A bulb can work with ac or dc in any direction because it just gets hot and glows.

First things first - batteries put out DC current - that stands for "direct current", meaning it flows in one direction only, all the time. The outlet on the wall puts out AC current - alternating current reverses back and forth all the time. Current on one wire goes out, then back, then out again, at 60 times a second.
OK, now to your qeustion: A flashlight bulb just needs a current flowing through it to light up. It doesn't care which way it goes, as long as it flows. It's simple, it's cheap, it's pretty reliable.
Your MP3 player, however, is fussier. It has an electronic chip, and electronic components, all of which expect just so much power, going always the same way. Feed it the wrong way, and it may fry, it may refuse to work, or it might start playing Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton standards from the 1970's.
My guess is that there is a current sensor that protects it from getting fried if you put the batteries in backwards, but I can't guarantee it - I didn't help design the thing. I won't guarantee that it won't start channeling Porter and Dolly, however.

a flashlight just takes the power straight to the light and lights it up so matter which way u put them a flashlight will always work
but a mp3 player takes the power to a processor wer it distrbutes the power to the different componets

a light bulb simply bridges those connections and the filament glows white hot.
your MP3 player requires rectified current, meaning that current flow can only go in one direction. theres a ground circuit, and a power circuit.

That means your mp3 player is probably broken. Maybe the old batteries corroded the player. It might be time to get a new one or bring it to a repair shop.

it has to do with the circuitry of the mp3 player. a flash light is a simple stream circuit. MP3 much more complex.

didnt think a flah light worked with the batteries backwards, it never have for me. but they are two different electronics!
