At the present time, Spanish is still not a cumpulsory subject in American schools any more than any other foreign language is.
However, you are not alone in believing that Spanish should not be taught in our public schools at all which is what I think you really mean. I know a lot of Americans personally who really feel this way. To some extent, they have a legitimate argument. History shows that bilingualism usually does not work in a country and the few countries where it has worked like Switzerland and Singapore are rare exceptions. In other words, anti-bilingualism is not just an Anglo-American phenomenon.
I have mixed feelings about these kinds of things myself. While I would never approve of a foreign language being made cumpulsory in American public schools, I still think that Spanish and French are both fine languages for anyone planning to major in Romance languages and literature. Anyone who majors in Latin American history or Sociology would probably be well served by some knowledge of Spanish too since many of our urban poor speak Spanish. At most, I would prefer to restrict its teaching in our public schools to students who seriously plan to use the language for something but I wouldn't eliminate it entirely from the curriculum.
So, to a large degree, it all depends on what you want to do with a foreign language. If you feel you will never have any need for it then, by all means, don't learn it; it will only be a waste of time for you.
Finally, don't underestimate the ability of Hispanics to learn English. Many of them are learning English and making less of a fuss about it than French Canadians. This will certainly take some of the pressure off the American public for having to know Spanish in the future.

From a strictly practical standpoint, it might be a good idea for me to learn some Spanish if I intended to live in a part of America that has a high Hispanic population (the illegal immigration issue aside). That said, I am very much opposed to illegal immigration and believe that anyone who seeks citizenship in our country, regardless of place of birth, has an obligation to learn English. That is one vital thing that my forebears had to do when they came to America through Ellis Island in the immigration wave to America that lasted from the 1880s to the 1920s. The English language is the binding element that holds disparate elements of our culture together, and to not require this of would-be citizens is truly a recipe for trouble. I would also assert that to not require resident aliens (who are temporarily in this country) to learn at least passable English is bad not only for the native born but for the resident alien as well. And I firmly reject the notion that it is "racist" for Americans to not learn Spanish, or, for that matter, any other foreign language, although not knowing any language other than English might be inadvisable to those who want to engage in international business.

1st reason cultural?? learning is always good. U r lucky ur continent only speak 3 major languages and a 4rd that is french.
2nd for you to know that most some part of the USA like California have 2 co-official main languages.
You dont have to learn Spanish if u dont want to, but if had at least some knowledge you would know that spanish is spoken in more areas than Mexico. Dont despise like that.

You are right they should learn, unfortunatley many are so illiterate, who never did have any type of schooling in their lives. But it is good to learn Spanish, not for them but for ourselves. I speak five languages acutally three, but I understand and communicate in five. My grandparents spoke Old Castilian which I picked up from them and it helps me get around in modern spanish.
So to answer your question, why should we learn Spanish? It shows you are more intelligent. But they should learn English if they want to live here. But many of them do Speak good English and we cannot stereotype all Mexicans, besides not all of them are Mexicans, some are from Central and South America too.

Well, nobody is forcing you to learn anything, adolf. I see that you are totally against learning. I suppose, then, that you want to close the schools, because it is not necessary to learn, to know new things.
By the way, who writes the messages for you ?

Simple answer: The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. There should be a world federal system of government and border restrictions should be non-existent. It should not be necessary to learn Spanish, because there should be a world auxiliary language.

Because the matter of fact is that there are groups of Mexicans that are taking over USA for their own...Why do I say that well because I was told by a very powerful personality in the surrounding community that I live in that was the plan ...They planned to take California which they have almost succeeded in and they have allot of the west coast...
She went as far to say that they will raise their flag here once again! Does that piss you off? I emailed Arnold some information about her activities and the organization she works for but I bet he could care less because he is for immigration with little restrictions..
This woman tried to recruit me for her cause which is free programs and amnesty for illegals because they believe they are entitled..Well to shorten up the story I told her my stance
which is balance and we haven't talked since! She coordinated all the marches and ditching school she was also for turning our flag upside down!
I wish I could get it through to the general population that this is no joke but people don't want to listen
Spanish is a smart language to learn but it shouldn't be forced!

Why are you so reluctant to learn a foreign language? Are you lazy or stupid? I mean, so you learn a little Spainish, does that take anything away from you?
Spainish is becoming the universal language. I study it for fun and it hasn't hurt me one bit.
