Well, in order to give you a better style, I'd need to see a pic of you now.

Most of the time, girls like spikes, or slicked back short hair. If you have long hair, then girls like in a pony tail, and neatly trimmed. So If you want to grab a girls attention, throw a little colour in the mix. But don't go with the basic frosted tips. If you're goin to colour your hair, make it stand out! I always do. I had my hair crayon-red at one time, and another, this was by accident, my hair wound up hot pink. Like the girl in "5th Element", and let's just say that I had people I didn't know talkin to me about my hair. I'm not tellin you to go out and dye your hair pink, just a colour that isn't to common.

On guys, I'd have to say a darker colour would look better. There's a colour called midnight blue, it changes from black to blue in certain lighting. You can go with like a blood red colour, or if you want to go lighter, you can try an orange colour. Make sure it's not pumkin orange, but maybe with a little brown would look good.
If you have long hair, then I'd do the ends, and maybe a streak on each side in the front. Go with an outrageous colour, like bright blue, or bright orange. Pick a colour that will really get someone's attention.

If you want to avoid colours, then try a different cut. Short hair is sort of hard to try. If you're into punk, then go with a short mohawk type cut, not an actual mohawk though. You can style them different ways, for different reasons. You can slick it back for a job interveiw, or leave it messy for the day to day thing.
You can always try the typical hollywood look, and have the very front of you hair about 2 inches long and spiked up, and have the rest of your hair a little shorter. Or you can always try the neatly but messy look. To get that look, you pretty much jump out of the shower, dry your hair a little, put some gel in it, tip youir head over, and brush your hair. When you stand back up, your hair stays where it lands. If done right, it can look pretty good.

If you have long hair, then try getting layers. I think that layers on a guy looks very sexy! As long as they have the right layer.
Try to avoid getting the "bangs" part of the cut. Maybe start at the bottom of the ear lobe, or maybe the top of the jaw, somewhere between the two.

Go to a salon and take a look at some books. They have a ton of books if they're any good. Good luck!!
