You probably pulled an innercostal muscle. Which can hurt incredibly. The best treatment for this is to get massage therapy. It will relieve a lot of the pain. You will need several treatments because these muscles take longer to heal then others.

Also a chiropractor can help with this pain. I've enclosed a web site where you can find a chiropractor in your area.

Check here a very effective sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

The pain is caused by a pinched nerve in your back for the nerves often send the pains around the body on the nerves to be pains along that nerve. When nerves are pinched they tighten up the muscles around them to trap the nerve in that pain. When you cough or sneeze your spine is compressing to put more pressure on the nerves for the increase in pain. To get rid of these problems you have to free up your back muscles to release the nerve and here's how to free them up: Back: (do while sitting) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Chances are that you coughed so hard that you bruised your lower rib. I heard that this isn't uncommon. It might heal by itself but I would contact a doctor just to be on the safe side.

you could also have pleurisy. It's something like the lining of the lungs that gets inflamed. It goes away on its own after a week or two.
