I listen to music other than Christian music. I guess i thought that unless the music said things unpleasing to God it was okay. How do you feel about this?

It is a fact of life that whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his action. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2,5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." This is how we allow Jesus to be "the Lord of our lives". That gives us a pretty clear picture of the kind of music we SHOULDN'T listen to.

Obviously, the best kind of music we can listen to is that which praises and glorifies God. There are a lot of Christian musicians and singers out there, spanning nearly every genre available to the secular market. From there, it is a matter of taste. There is nothing inherently wrong any particular style of music. But if secular music leads you to think about, or get involved in something that does not glorify God – then you should avoid it.

What music right now wouldn't offend god?

Classical, rock, hip-hop, and everything else, yes even christian music have something in them that would offend.

From what i know theres christian rock, christian hip-hop, and no matter what, if you really want to nit-pick, then you can say that these types of music have ties with all non christian types of music, with no real diffrence.

Just because they say god a couple of times does not mean its always correct.

You've read the bible with people singing and dancing to music. Heck Jesus went to a wedding, I doubt they were singing praises the whole wedding. Unless Im wrong.

Make you own choice. In the end only you control what goes into your brain.

It depends if it is a sin to someone. This would be a sin to one who thought the song was a sin.

The song could say something completely different from one person to the next.

Christians aren't under the law of sin & death, but under grace. So, if I listen to God & the Spirit leads me to listen to a song, I will. And if the Spirit lets me discern an evil message in the song, then I won't listen to that song anymore.

A song that isn't exactly Christian may be a lovely song, in that it sings about love, joy, peace, patience, etc... There is no law against these things. Only for the self righteous.

But if the song has the message of destruction, hate, rejection, lies, murder, alchohal, drugs, adolatry, adultery, etc. & is basically just antichrist & one discerned that, then it would be a sin to listen to it.

Personally, I like to stick with Christian artists that I like their sound, only because I don't have to spend time discerning. It is just safer that way.

Remember also, that musical talent is originally a gift of God. And some are especially gifted when they took their first breath. But the devil also knows this & that is why the devil steals peoples gifts for his destructive purposes. The talented artist is being ripped off when they believe they need to sing for the devil. When a person is specially gifted in this, the devil wants it. A person needs to be strong & use his/her gift for the glory of God or to sing lovely songs giving thanks to God for this gift & leave no room for the devil.

What makes music "Christian?"

The lyrics? Well if that's the case, and if is wrong to listen to any music that isn't "praising God" what about reading anything other than "Christian literature?" Is that allowed?

And who decides if purely instrumental pieces are "Christian?"

Listen to the music you love, that uplifts your spirit, and speaks to your soul. That's what music is for!

I think its fine to listen to secular music,as long as it doesn't start affecting your faith. It was hard for me at one time in my life to listen to secular music, because it stirred in me a deep loneliness for a man,i was going through a divorce at the time.So i stopped, and got healed up and now its fine for me to hear love songs.I love dancing so i love funk, rhythm and blues. Many dogmatic Christians will have very harsh judgement on listening to anything other then christian music. To me thats nothing but fear, and God created music, except for some stuff that the lryics glorify evil.

Definitely - we can see God's beauty in many things, including music. Now, if you think the music isn't glorifying to God or if it affects your walk negatively, maybe you should switch it off. But I listen to lots of music that doesn't qualify as "Christian."

And I knew a man once who said that Metallica (!) helped to lead him to Christ! The beauty in their music was very influential to him and he was adamant about his point. So, there ya go.

Listen to what you want. Christianity is not legalism, not a cult and it is not a religion. The music you listen to will not determine whether you go to heaven or hell. God is interested in one thing: Are you covered in the blood of Jesus? If you are not, then i suggest that you concentrate on that before concerning yourself about the kind of music you listen to.

Well, I'm Christian, and I listen to other than Christian music.. truth is.. I don't really like Christian music. It gets too boring.

I don't go to church, but hey... I'm still Christian! If God didn't like us listening to other than Christian music, I think He'd tell us by now.
