That depends on the religion to which you are referring.
In the Christian religion, it is not possible to convert someone away from Christ. Any person who professed faith in Christ and then converted to another religion, never was a Christian to begin with. Once salvation is given, it can never be lost. This is written in the Bible. The very nature of Christ is love and draws people. The only thing that can lure people away from Christ is sin. To embrace sin over Christ means that the person never repented to begin with, and repentance is one of the fundamental requirements for salvation.
Therefore, to claim to have converted away from Christianity is a misconception. The convert never was a Christian to begin with.
I may take an interest in the Wiccan belief and read about it and understand quite a bit about it, but that does not make me a witch. Likewise, many people who attend church on Sunday, profess their faith and confess their sins, may call themselves Christians, but unless their words are backed up by action (a change of heart by repentance and obedience) then they are just fooling themselves.

Where does it say in the NT that God is going to protect us? That is part of the old covenant. And no, we have to guard our own faith. God can help but at the end of the day the decision is ours.
