What exactly makes Islam the religion of peace?

I ask this question in all seriousness, though I realize it could sound snarky. I am not as knowledgeable regarding Islam as I should be. Please explain, in your own words, what it is about Islam that makes it the religion of peace.

It's too long to explain, the word "Islam" is originally coming from the word " peace" in Arabic so if I could explain to you you need to understand the whole religion but briefly "Islam" means that one is submitted to God's will so he's "Muslim" a Muslim is living in peace between him and his creator, between him and himself, between him and the others and I means All the others, whether they're Muslims or non-Muslims. Muslims are forbidden to fight other nations or to attack them, it's clearly stated in the Holy Quran, they're only allowed to defend themselves. I think you will understand better if you read the Holy Quran.

More accurately Islam is a religion of SUBMISSION! NOT PEACE! The strategy is to become the majority of the population then rise up and convert others to the faith by the sword or whatever means necessary. If you dont you are considered an "infidel" and ultimately will be killed.

Islam Does Not Mean Peace

Muslims are not real studious and tend to reject scholarship in favour of their own version of things. In other words, they invent stuff when it suits them. Take the definition of the word Islam. In the USA, I have heard Muslims actually say the word "Islam" means peace, tying to put a kinder gentler wrapping paper on their horrible religion. As you can see from the authorities below, the lexicon definition of "Islam" is submit. After which one will experience peace. Notice the cause and effect in this quote: First you submit in Islam... then second, after submitting, you will experience peace: "And a Muslim ... is 'one who submits' or surrenders to the will of God, thereby attaining peace of mind and soul." (The Joy of Sects, Peter Occhigrosso, 1996, p394-397) Problem is if you blindly swallow the mythical and fictitious claims of Islam as true, and never rock the boat, you will experience peace. But for the intelligent who reject Islam because they are not prepared to ignore the universal testimony of every history book in the world, Islam means war, death persecution.

Peace comes after war. How's that for an explaination. Without WAR there is no PEACE.

How can you have peace when a man and woman, both wearing acceptable Iranian Muslim clothing, walk side by side in public, as they are engaged to be married, and are then killed by Iraian miltia.

The peace is fundamentally between Allah and the Muslim. Or as a Christian might put it, "being at peace with God." The Muslim is one who submits to Allah.

"Jihad" does not mean holy war, but effort, struggle, to live the righteous life. This is specifically called "jihad fi-nafs," the struggle of the soul.

Any religion is as peaceful as its adherents make it. No religion should be judged by those who do not practice it or who distort it.

Otherwise, we would have to say that the greatest fiend in modern history was a "Christian."

My guess is that after 9-11, it was labeled "the religion of peace" by a speechwriter at the whitehouse in order to make it seem as if the terrorists were some kind of isolated incident. It's getting harder to swallow since, Indonesia, the entire middle east, the phillipines, east Timor, Bosnia, Albania, Chechnya, Kosovo, Cyprus, Eithopia, The Sudan (and many more) ALL have one thing in common, they have Islamists who cannot get along with their neighbors. When I start actually seeing evidence of any peacefull intent, I'll start believing it.

you must understand that the foundations of Islam were set in ruthless deserts of Arabs .... they set rules for survival of their races which are outdated and irrevevant now and thus seem extreme....But like most other religions int he world, Islam talks of protecting the weak and poor , sacrificing your life for good. The harsh side of islam is faced by us when extremists twist these idealogies of protection and sacrifice into ugly things in the name of Jihad.

I am a Hindu but I was raised in India with the beleif of respecting every religion .... which is why I have not only visited temples but mosques, churches and synagouges and other places of worship and prayed with eqaul soul. I beleive in God and His goodness... NOT in the way man CHOOSES to twist and bend his words for ulerior and fanatic motives

A few thousands who are less than 1% of Muslims does not make Islam a bad religion, the world is full of peaceful and great Muslims who represent Islam and show It's greatness.

Islam comes from the word Shalom that means peace.

Islam is a religion of peace if you submit to it. But if you don't then it allows them to revenge their enemies or enemies of Islam, Mohammad or who oppress Muslims with offensive cartoons or disrespectful comments. In other words, kill your enemies.

But it really isn't a religion of peace because it takes you away from Gods Redeeming Grace & the God of Peace. It denies Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God and that He shed His own blood for the remission of our sins.

islam is the meeting point of all the great religions.no one become muslim without believeing in jews and jesus .muslims must respect all the angels and the books of other relgions.it combines the monothiesm of jews with the gift of devine power given to jesus.it relates the medium path.it speaks great of abrahim..and david and isaac and sara and maryam and adam.it dooesnt say eve is the house of sin.it doesnt say woman is the supporter of the devil.it forbades the excesses.and stress on the middle path.it clearly enunciate no arab is superior to non arab..
.it is anti racial,international ,meeting point of all the great religion.promotes understanding and stresses on the hard work and undertanding of the secrets of nature .it is angainst extremeism.it has the wondeful combination of tribalistic and civic values..it stresses on individualism but same time doesnt sacrifice the well knit family heirarcy...
