Shop and compare prices on line and in the store. That's about the only thing I can suggest. Find out about the equipment and the type of chocolate that it works best with.

If you want something that's reasonably priced then look for one like that and you can also use for bulk chocolate from the grocery store or bulk food store.

You need first get an idea of what type of fountains that are out there to compare prices first. You could always look at these sites and find out if they sell their products in stores as well.

Some stores may carry non commerical brands or you also have the choice of renting one. Check in the house ware departments or specialty shops in your area.

Ask the sales person questions about the makes and models they carry and maybe if you find a store that demostrates how they work and you can sample their chocolate.

Try the shopping channel or home shopping channel in your area. You can also find ones on ebay as well. The only brands I have heard of is the rival and charlescraft.

That's about the only two brands I have seen out there and their could be more if you look around? You may also find those brands for fondue makers as well.

Probably the less expensive way to go about it is to buy a fondue rather then a fountain that way you can spend an equal amount a good fondue and get quality chocolate.

A fondue isn't as expensive as a fountain and you can get the same results except the look of the fountain because all you are really doing is melting down the chocolate and using it to dip fruit or what ever you like to dip in chocolate.

If you are not into spending a lot of money I would get a fondue instead but also look around because you can get ones that have a heating pot inside it and the least expensive ones you just put over a flame.

You can also use a double boiler pots where as you fill one pot with water and you put in another pot over it on your stove and you can melt down chocolate that way as well.

You can also find a number of fondue recipes on the web.

Here's what a fondue looks like.

If you get a cheap one chances are it's going be disgusting... for my chocolate fountian it took 6 cups of vegetable oil and the chocolate tasted like crap. Chances are if you want a good quality chocolate foutian buy the more expencive kind, It will save you alot of money on vegetable oil.

I've heard they are really unhygienic as the temperature the chocolate is kept at is perfect for breeding germs. I could be wrong about that, but it's something that is said in the "engagements" section as a lot of people consider them for their weddings.
