Counting calories is stupid. People don't have to spend there time counting how many calories they have eaten all day. If you are in middle school and you get school lunch then what do you do?Are you going to ask the lunch lady how much calories are in the sloppy joes?

It would be a good way to start a diet program, if you know how much calories you have on a regular basis, you can start to figure out which foods you eat could be eliminated or reduced. Then you can start to find foods that are better for you. I agree it's impossible to count calories at a school or restaurant. Perhaps at school you can bring your own prepared foods that are lower in calories and at a restaurant, most have a low calorie choices or ask the waiter for options.

I agree with you. I do not count calories at all, I find it is much too time consuming, and I just don't enjoy food anymore when I do it. Instead, I buy foods with lower calories in them, and stick to fruits, vegetables, proteins. Also, I do 30 minutes of excercise each day, I have lost 12 pounds.

However, I wouldn't say counting calories is stupid, but I find that encouraging people to do so is a leading cause of eating disorders. People constantly have a need to always focus on food and how much calories per day, constantly adding them up. Later on, it can create a fear of gaining too much weight because they have eaten too many calories.

Personally, I look more at how many carbohydrates, sugar and fat is in the food.

if you think that educating yourself about the nutritional contents of food is stupid then you are indeed the one that is stupid.

counting calories enables people to actually "know" the nutritional value of the food items that they eat. if you can't look at a plate of food and be able to tell what is protein, carbs or fats then how can you ever eat healthy? counting calories is only something that needs to be done on a short-term basis. once you know how big of a portion of a food item is good for "you" then counting is no longer really necessary.

don't knock things just because you don't understand it or it doesn't apply to your situation

What gives you the right to tell others what they do is stupid?! Are you perfect? People try all sorts of things to eat a balanced diet ... calorie counting is just one of them. You should try to be more understanding of their attempts to improve themselves. I would not criticize you if you cannot do long division (I can) and need to use a calculator. And you can find general calorie counts for basic foods and fast foods.

Not everyone in here is still in school, or, eats a pre-made school lunch. For those who have control of what they eat, counting calories is one of the best methods of weight loss.
