if someone claimed they were the son of God, born to a virgin, the same kit-and-kaboodle as the Jesus story, would any Christian person believe him to really be the son of God in the same way Jesus was?
if so, why would you believe him without proof?
if not, why would you believe that the Jesus in the Bible was truly the son of God?
Whats the difference between someone claiming to be the son of God, and someone actually being the son of God? Can it be proven?

Skylolo - I don't care, I am fascinated with peoples perceptions though, and how people can believe something for one reason and disbelieve something for the same reason

Barry - great point. thanks. just to ask though, I believe there are many eye witness accounts, hundreds even, and written documents to back them up as to the existence of life-forms from other worlds coming to Earth? Do you believe that this is true? afterall, it has the same evidence as what you speak of in your comment. Just a thought.

The Avenger - yes, clearly I don't nkow what i'm talking about. Thats why I ASKED the QUESTION? Isn't that obvious?
What concerns me is that you don't know what you are talking about because you can't answer the question. Are you following a religion you don't even understand?

Wouldn't be true today because....He already came in fulfillment of the scriptures.
And He's coming back as judge
The Jews in the 1st century weren't able to recognize Jesus as the Messiah because of their spiritual blindness....God in His sovereignty chose not to reveal it to them....but rather to a chosen few.....
And then to us today through His Word
When you have the Holy Spirit of God living & dwelling within you as a Christian, you have all the proof you need.

If Jesus, the son of God, were to come back again, believe me, us Christians would know it. When Jesus comes back, all Christians will "disappear and meet Him in the sky". (Revelations). No true Christian will believe someone who claims to be the Son of God without this happening. There is that guy in Texas who says he is. He also gambles and has a lot of girlfriends (does that look like something Jesus would do?). You will know, too, my friend. When the time comes.
(don't give me a thumbs down just b/c you don't agree with me)

I'm sure everyone is right. If you think about it this guy would be self-evident by his almighty grace and loving heart, his forgiving nature etc. He would really be here as a guide, teacher, healer and prophet and trying to enjoy what He Himself prepared for Himself. The good news is is that we were made in his image and if we follow what we ourselves know to be good and right in the eyes of his dad then we can hope to enjoy the same blessings through the ever equanamitous eyes of the Od that is the hypothetical force binding believers to the straight and narrow path and hopefully in peace, friendship and understanding, whoever we are. I always likened ourselves to equal points on an axis.

Dont worry, there will be people who will believe this "New" guy. Its not that difficult to write a Gospel, as proven by Mr Mark, Mr Matthew, Mr Luke and Mr John and Mr Paul.
If people in the olden times believed the Bible story, we can at least understand because most of them were Uneducated and the Bible was not Transparent to them and Scrutinized enough.
But in today's world, when the Bible is torn apart revealing inconsistencies and contradictions, EDUCATED People still dont seem to ACKNOWLEDGE the FALLACIES in the Bible. In fact, they Choose to Remain IGNORANT.
As Such, if a "New" guy were to appear and claim that he is Son of God, there will be people like the Christians today, who will acknowledge him !

In a court of law, where there is a burden of proof, you can testify on your own behalf. As much historical fact that is contained in the Bible, no one wants to hear its testimony. In a court of law, where there is a burden of proof, you only need one credible eyewitness to prove your case. Jesus said he would rise again, testifying on his own behalf. There were 500 eyewitnesses to his resurrection, (corroborating his testimony), some of which were still alive when Peter wrote his letter to the church, but no one wants to hear their testimony. In Jesus' day, just like today, there were many people who didn't believe in him. His own family members thought he was beside himself. He didn't have a lot of bandwagon jumpers, and when he did, he drove them off, stating that they were only following him for the bread that he fed them when they were hungry. He offended many people during his time here. The religious leaders, recorders of the law, just about everybody but the common man. Proof is apparently in the eye of the beholder--or the believer.
If you claimed to be the Son of God in that day, you had better have some substantial evidence to prove it. Miracles were commonplace with him. He raised a more than one person from the dead. Remember, Matthew, Luke and John were actual eyewitnesses of these events, not just followers. If you have any doubt about that, Mark wrote down these events, having been told of them by other eyewitnesses. He also healed, fed and restored many others. He said he would rise again after his death. He did, and people saw him, touched him and ate with him. These people went to their death, tortured and martyred, refusing to deny he had risen from the dead. If you want to find his body, you won't. It's a ridiculous argument that he never existed because you can't find his body. If he rose from the dead, you wouldn't find him in a tomb, would you? His resurrection proves his deity. He was in the grave, above ground, behind a rock, in a sealed tomb for three days. Roman soldiers under penalty of death guarded his tomb to ensure that his followers didn't steal his body. 500+ people say they saw him and he spoke to them after his death. Some say they touched him. Others say they ate with him. They even say he ascended into heaven afterwards. Get your shovels and picks, backhoes or whatever equipment you need. You know the general area. It's not that large. You know the general time frame. You know what the Bible says about the way he died. Find his body, confirm it's him, and you kill Christianity. But if not,...

There is no difference. That's why it's called "faith" not "fact". Keep in mind that there are many kooks who DO claim to be messiahs, etc. Those people are (and rightly so) ridiculed and laughed at. But there is no difference. There is no real logic, rhyme or reason behind organized religion. That's why you have people amazed at the burn marks on bread from a cheese sandwich, or similar "phenomena".

Good question and I am amused at a lot of the answers.
It would be great if Jesus DID come back as a surprise and all the christians shunned him without proof!

Because Jesus Christ IS the one and only Son of God. One only has to know Him, to know the difference. People with this same attitude crucified Jesus on a cross, trying to find proof that He was the Son of God. He rose from the grave and returned to them, and they bowed down at His feet.

I would be prepared to believe anyone who truly claimed to be a Child of God, but only if they did not follow any organised religion.
(Note: the Virgin thing, etc was all added by the Catholic Church, to spice up the storey a bit)

Jesus (PBUH) will return, with the same message he came to preach the first time around, that there is no God except God and He (Jesus) is His (God's) servant and Prophet (Not son).
Trust me believers will recognise him.

There were plenty of doubters then! As for today, if He healed sick, gave sight to the blind, walked on water, raised dead, was executed and then rose from the dead and walked out of his crypt...I'd be a believer. That's enough proof for me!
BTW, when Jesus comes again, it won't be through a virgin. It will be in glory and for the purpose of judgment.
