If their first spouses were guilty of adultery themselves, thenMike and Carol had the right to "put them away" as the Bible calls it and remarry.

Actually I believe that they were both widowed.
Remember that this was the 70's IT wouldn't have been acceptable by TV standards for them to have been divorced.

their status as widow or widower or divorcees is hotly contested. I've sen references to both as being widowed and both as being divorced. We can't pass judgment until we have al the facts.
