You're right. And unfortunately, in alot o fthe countries where there is such poverty (African countries for example), the Govt is so corrupt that the aid we send doesn't even get to the people who need it.

It is disturbing that so many people are suffering from starvation and lack of water, while many others are getting so fat.
However, I do not think that governments are saying there is not enough food. The problem is getting the food to the people who need it most. Many of these countries are war torn and it is very dangerous to travel there. The US has sent loads of food in the past to countries in need, only to have the majority of the supplies go to the armies. This only gives the armies more strength to continue and the problem escalates.

It blows my mind that the US and Canada can feed the world 10 times over yet we have people starving in our own countries. We are wasteful, selfish, and ignorant people. We grind up dead cows to feed cows with so we can sell an extra few tons of corn to the movie theaters. We are so lucky that mad cow wasn't a larger epidemic. But it won't stop them from finding short cuts on feeding the cattle so we can all still get a .99 hamburger.
If we could feed the world 10 times there should not be one hungry person in the world.

We give BILLIONS every year. The problem is that the vast majority of it gets stolen by the corrupt governments on the other end which is what caused the poverty in the first place.
Countries that have a government that allow them to prosper, do. The ones that are corrupt and steal the money don't. The ONLY thing the US could do about this is send in our military. Is that what you want?

Many poor Americans are overweight, too. Have you ever compared the price of a fast food meal to the ingredients (hamburger, potatoes, vegetables, etc) for a meal made at home, or seen what is "WIC-approved" at your local supermarket, or gone to a convenience store (there usually aren't supermarkets, you have to bus or drive to those) in a poor neighborhood? Nutrient-poor food that only fills up an empty belly is very easy and cheap to get, and nutritious food (especially if it's remotely appealing) is usually not. What I'm saying is that we're looking at some very complicated problems, and that what your eyes see is not necessarily what is.

musta heard the saying the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer yes its a sad affair but all the money in the world can't help these people you need to know the facts why the poor countries are poor they owe massive debts to the richer countries and the debts get bigger all the time the government should probably consider droppin them and maybe help these countries out no need for people to starve

I have two opinions. One is how it amazes me that people in poor countries have a better grasp of the English language than you do.
The other opinion I hold is: Yes, wealthier countries do have some responsibility toward helping poorer countries, however, the way they have gone about it in the past is useless. Dropping truckloads of food of in Ethiopia doesn't solve anything - showing people how to grow their own food and build sustainable water tanks does.

u can't blame people for eating if they have food.it's not a sin to BE rich cos the must have obviously worked hard for it (i'm talkin about honestly earned money over here).and it's not practically possible to distribute food to every undernourished country.what's wrong is to WASTE food.most people don't appreciate what they have in life.
+ most people tend to consider only the "big" wastages to be wastages. but every little thing counts.e.g. if u shut the tap instead of leaving it running till u apply soap on your hands that will save atleast a little amount of water.doing this as a habit during your whole life will save a lot of water.

Yes, it's sad. It doesn't seem like there's much your average American can do because a lot of those "1 dollar a day can feed a child in Zimbabwe" things are scams. I guess the best way to be proactive about it to reasearch food programs in impoverished countries. It really doesn't take a lot of money to feed someone or buy them a brita pitcher to filter their water.

There are poor and starving and homeless people in USA and UK as well. Lets take care of the homeless and hungry in USA and UK, then lets take care of the third world countires.
When USA or UK spends 100 million dollars to create a movie instead of spending 100 million on homelessness, it's sad ain't it??
Cheers

I lived in Africa for 12 years - and to come from that to a country where there are sixteen kinds of DIET dog food - where supermarkets are larger than whole villages - where people throw food away each day more than enough to feed a whole countryside -
it's no sin to be rich or to enjoy life. It is somehow wrong to waste food and resources, and to over indulge when others are starving.
Somehow when people talk about how this is all one world and we all have to take care of it - they always mean trees and fish. They never use that kind of language when talking about other people.
