If they are just thoughts, how do we visit places we have never been, or talk to people that we have never seen?

It's just random stuff buried in your brain. It usually relates to what you were thinking about during the day, or just interesting random junk you come up with while resting.

You don't visit places you've never been nor talk to people you haven't seen. You IMAGINE you visit those places and talk to those people. It's not real.

There is one exception, sort of, to this. If you read Elizabeth Loftus' work, you'll see that we can easily adjust our memories to what we want to remember. Even though our dreams are about fanciful places and people, we sometimes later visit places or meet people that remind us of our dream. If we believe that dreams actually mean something, we will subconsciously fill in the details of our memory of the dream to match the place or person we see now. This type of backfilling is common and accounts for much of the "deja vue" and "pre-cog dreams" we have. If you actually take the time to write all the details of all of your dreams, you'll see that they don't match as well with anything in reality that you couldn't just guess at happening. It's harder to rewrite memory when you have it on paper.

dreams are ways or doors that we use to do things that we have never done before. If dreams were just dreams than how would we be able to remember them when we wake up? Dreaming is our use of our imagination mixed in somewhere with our concious knowing that something like this exsits out there. Who knows, humans may have powers like we see on TV flying, laser vision, seeing the future if not than how did the people come up with that in the beginning? I can understand flying but the other things? Those who have dreams about the future maybe you can see into the future but no human has ever been able to unlock that part of the brain where dreams orginate. Someday, somewhere someone will do it just not yet.

Dreams are the reflections of memories and desires. The reality life is a bigger suborn dreams and dreams are your desires and memories reflections. Your memories are accuminating from many previous lifes and experiences. That is why someone can remember the previous life was a navy in 2nd world war in German and he went back there to dig up the gold where he burried it there. He dug it.

Most of my dreams are simply mind dumps, places that are jumbled fractions of thoughts, movies, fears and random ideas that run through my head on any given day.

Look, it is just a free 4-8 hours of vivid hallucinations. Enjoy it but don't attach too much importance to it.
