Our beloved family cat recently passed last wk.So we got a 1yr old unfixed male cat, over the weekend, who needed a new home. He seems very friendly, but scared . All day he is very quiet and hides, but right at 10pm, when everyone is asleep, he begins to cry, and howl, and it continues consistently all night until morning. We have a small home, and nowhere to put him so he will be out of hearing range. He is keeping both us , our 5 yr old , & our 1yr old baby up during the night. Also, I think he is spraying in this liter box. Three times now, there has been a god awful smell coming from his box, it stinks up the whole house, and takes 3 or more hrs to go away. We took him in knowing we would not have the finances to get him fixed for another month. There are NO low cost clinics near our home. I dont think I can do this for another night , much less a whole month, and I dont think my hubby will let me. I feel bad about it, but think I need to find him find him a new home Today.

Call Petco or the Humane Society, for inexpensive ways to fix him. If you cannot afford it, then you may struggle also when he gets sick, which all animals eventually do (and they deserve medical treatment). But then, it's better than him being homeless. Is he ferile? He sounds very stressed -- usually unneutered males spray OUTSIDE their litter box, they are supposed to be inside it, so normally that is no problem. Could he be sick, or have bad litter, if it is smelling so bad?

And it's very interesting to know that only in America do cats breed and create homeless offspring, very interesting indeed (yeah right!)

When you decided to take the cat did you make an appointment for a health check before you brought him into your home?
If you have paid your bills on time your vet will usually extend credit to you to make payments to have him neutered.
He will continue to spray to mark his territory. It smells awful.
Get him fixed or give him away. But don't get another pet if you don't have the finances to give it proper care.

Yes, you should find him a new home. I had to do that recently as well - where I live, it costs $150 to neuter a cat, and I just couldn't afford it at the time. But I found him a good home as an outdoor cat and he will live un-neutered (I don't live in the US, so no American-minded comments about how evil it is not to neuter a cat, okay? That's so American-centric!).

If you aren't able to get him fixed then yes you should find him a new home. Where I live it is 50.00 to get your cat neutered, plus you can get a 25.00 voucher from the animal shelter to cover half the costs. So it's only 25.00 to get him fixed. You should check into that with your animal shelter or you are going to have to part with your kitty.

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet. He might be sick too. Take him to the humane society. Please don't get another animal if finances are that tight. A cat costs about $800 a year to maintain.

If you take him to your local rescue centre and explain the problem, I'm sure they will be very understanding and will be happy to take him/her off your hands. This would be the best option for both you and your family, as well as the cat!
