It might be. There may be things about him that you aren't aware of that his family is. I would imagine its for your own protection. If a schizophrenic is medicated, they can be as normal as can be, but unmediated, a force to be reckoned with. You may not be completely aware of all the details. His family might be keeping something to themselves for your boyfriends privacy. Let things ride until they get him medication.

The family probably knows what effects his illness more than you, simply because they have lived with it longer than you have.
To give him the support he needs, they know its medication that he needs at this time. The problem is with schizophrenics is sometime they "feel" better off the meds. but it makes them unpredictable, and sometimes dangerous to themselves and others. But they will believe themselves in control - which is an aspect of their illness.
The family is supporting him, by making sure he has what he needs, and may be afraid that he can convince you that its not. He needs "tough love" and if you want to support him, support the parents, at this time.

I think it's the right thing. I have a step-son who has the same problem and he's not himself when he's not on his meds believe me. He's had the whole police force after him all at one time.

Honey, you need another boyfriend.
I don't mean to be disrespectful, but why would you want all that drama in your life?
