If you use anything much faster than 1/125 you will freeze the movement, depending on speed of movement and distance from camera. This is not always the best, as for ex. a racing car would look stationary, better to use a slower speed and pan with the subject, this will blur the background and give the impression of speed. 1/1600 is far too high a speed and will require a very large aperture/high speed film/lots of light.

Rule of thumb.
1/60 to eliminate camera shake .
1/125 walking subject.
1/250 running subject.
1/500 from moving car.
1/1000 to see water droplets.
1/2000 to see water spray.

This all assumes you are using a lens in the medium range of 28mm to 80mm. If you are using a higher focal lenght of say 135mm or 200mm or higher, go faster.

I hope that helps.

You can use shutter speed from 1 sec. on up. Using a slower shutter and pan with the subject is a good effect.

For kids running around 1/250 is plenty. At 1/1600 you can stop humming bird’s wings.

less than 1/60, if you increase the aperture u can get good picture in shorter time, otherwise the picture will be under exposed
