Twice while he was younger, I thought he was dead when I went into his room. But he was just sleeping very deeply. Now I find that instead of sleeping at night, he lies awake. He says he can't sleep. I did not know he could not sleep at night until a few months ago when he started getting up and roaming the house at night. I literally have to scream at him, tickle him, pinch him, do anything that will wake him in the mornings. It has been as late as 4:00 am that I have heard him up. But then when it is time to get up for the day, he doesn't feel like it because he's been up all night. It does not matter either what time he gets up in the morning, by night, he is wide awake. Now I find that he has been sleeping a lot in school. Does this sound like a sleep disorder or a normal teenage kid?

It could be that something has disrupted his body clock. Shift workers deal with this sleep disruption in a similar manner. In order to correct his sleeping patterns he needs some advice from his Doctor (who will also do a checkup for any other causes.) He is old enough to sort this out for himself. Ask him to see a Doctor for your peace of mind. If he refuses, there's not much you can do, I'm afraid.

Is there someone you could ask to watch the child? Then he could be safe while you nap. Are you taking iron? One of the biggest causes of tiredness during pregnancy is anemia (which iron helps), but don't double up on it because too much iron is poisonous.

He might have insomnia, and if he isn't getting his full 8 hours of sleep. It will be pretty hard to wake him up.
