Anonymous letters are investigated if there are other evidence that could support the allegations of irregularities.

depends completely on the type of allegation.

Certain offences require an injured party to make the report, like assault or criminal damage.

Many offences require the act to be found in the commission.

Honestly unless it's a serious offence, or there's already evidence available to us to corroborate the allegation, chances are the police will not investigate.

Whats more likely is that the information will be entered into the intelligence system, so if the police have any particular in the person or property that you are alleging against then they check the intel system and that information will be there, and they may investigate that also.

Or if the intelligence is good enough.... they may start an intelligence package, and task it out to the relevant team to check the facts... but this doesnt happen often as the intelligence would have to be very good and very specific with corroboration.

hope this helps.

your generally better off phoning crime stoppers.

if its a traffic matter we wont even bother

We investigate all complaints, it's part of our job. We also can dust the letter for finger prints and run them in our system and if the person has a criminal history we can find out who has come in contact with the letter. If the person has a state, city or government job where they had to be finger printed for a background check we can find the person in our system that way via the finger prints.

Please keep in mind that when you make a report or complaint to the police it must be honest and not something made up. If you lie and it's found out that you've lied you can and will be subject to an arrest warrant.

I think it depends on where you live. I lived in a very small town a few years ago and I'm sure they would investigate an anonymous report.

Now I live in a bigger city with more crime. It's hard to get them to come investigate a called in complaint if no one is in immediate danger.

Most police in the United States have anonymous tip lines you can call. If they investigate the TIP, then it is possible they would, as part of the investigatory process, narrow down people who might know about the tip by process of elimination. Believe me, this is not to investigate you, it is to look for what is known as corroboration. In order to get a search warrant or arrest warrant, judges do not want to let police have them based only on an anonymous tip. They don't care WHO the corroboration comes from, and it is not a matter of investigating you personally. However, if only a few people are likely to know what you tipped them off to, chances are that they might knock on your door in the course of looking for that corroboration.

If you have your own criminal issues to worry about, they frequently have the ability to ignore "small fish" when going after a "big fish" it is discretionary. If your concern is that you are reporting on police corruption or police commission of crime, then look to alternative places to report, such as federal agents or state agencies (state police versus local police) etc. There are laws to protect so-called whistleblowers.

It depends what the complaint is.

If you are alleging child abuse, then yes they would, because they couldn't take the chance not to.

If the report is about drugs being sold from a house, for example, it would be forwarded to the drug unit and they would treat it like a crime-stoppers tip ( nice to know information to point them in the right direction, but not much more useful than that).

Other way around. Anonymous are a bunch of neck-beards who really liked that film. About 7 Members of Anonymous have actual Computer Skills. They aren't all bad. The film was good.

Without a person to talk to, no report. If the complaint is serious, it would be investigated.

It depends upon what the report/complaint was about. If it was about something serious the answer is yes. If it is about something frivolous they might or might not. They are not in the business of getting in the middle of petty feuds between neighbors who don't want to give their names.
